Job Summary:

The UW-Madison Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) is comprised of 15 in-house attorneys who provide legal advice and representation on the wide range of complex and highly specialized legal issues affecting the research-intensive and flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System. The Attorney II position (University Legal Counsel) or Attorney III position (Senior University Legal Counsel) is a professional, academic staff position in OLA. The duties of the position include rendering oral and written advice, advising various university committees, and participating in training and preventive law presentations on a broad array of complex and novel legal subjects for UW-Madison administrators, faculty, and staff.

Principal Duties: Working in conjunction with attorneys in the practice area, this position primarily will be responsible for providing advice and counsel on the following:

Business Transactions; Research Compliance; Public Records:
The attorney will advise university administration and related offices across campus on issues pertaining to the following: Federal research compliance; Sponsored research contracting, including federal grant awards; General contract matters; Risk Management; Non-HIPAA privacy compliance; Animal research program, and related committee and compliance functions; State public records and open meetings laws; and Federal Freedom of Information Act requests.

Education:

Required
Terminal Degree
Juris Doctor (JD) from an A.B.A. accredited law school

Qualifications:

REQUIRED:
- 5 years professional experience practicing law.
- Interest in and ability to develop expertise in principal practice areas and other higher education
legal issues relevant to mission of a public research institution.
- Commitment to joining research and transactions practices.
- Strong legal research skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to effectively
convey complex topics to clients.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collegial and professional manner with peers/clients.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities and objectives.

License/Certification:

Preferred
State Bar of Wisconsin membership
Membership in good standing or admission to the State Bar of Wisconsin within one year of hire date.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position is flexible for in-person, hybrid, or remote work. We will consider qualified candidates working 100% remote.

Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 12 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding

Salary:

Negotiable
ANNUAL (12 months)
Salary is negotiable based on qualifications and experience.

Appointment at the Associate University Legal Counsel (Attorney I) or University Legal Counsel (Attorney II) level will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications.
