Job Summary:

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) serves as the public, environmental and occupational health laboratory for the State of Wisconsin. As part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the WSLH is committed to exploring new ideas which benefit the state, the nation and the world. This is an outreach specialist position and will be working at the front desk of the WSLH at 2601 Agriculture Drive in Madison. We invite you to become a part of this leading public health laboratory’s Environmental Health Division as an outreach specialist.

This position provides a wide variety of program support for the Environmental Health Division at the WSLH's Agriculture Drive location in Madison. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Providing a broad range of information to customers in person, on the phone, or online regarding water sampling and testing.
  • Placing and filling sampling kit orders.
  • Looking up test results for customers.
  • Communicating information about results based upon the rules and polices mandated by the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WI DNR).
  • Other duties such as:
  • Support environmental public health emergency response with Department of Health and collaborate with county health on the WellTAP program.
  • Work with the WI DNR Surface Water Grant Program, facilitating lab testing.
  • Assist in welcoming and guiding guests to the WSLH.
  • Provide administrative and laboratory information systems (LIMS) support for the department.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of web content.

The employee in this position is expected to use the tools and principles of quality management in performing their daily work including the following: Demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with other colleagues, supervisors, and all customers and partners. Provide constructive feedback for the purpose of continuous improvement in a manner that is supportive of the State Laboratory of Hygiene and its mission. Use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit. Present ideas, carry out assignments, and provide information as required. Participate in continuous learning through professional development activities.

Work hours are weekdays 7:45 am - 4:30 pm This position is located off campus at 2601 Agriculture Drive in Madison.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Schedules and secures resources and communicates logistics in support of an outreach program - 20%
  • Develops and evaluates curriculum and programs and provides recommendations for improvement - 15%
  • Identifies, promotes, and maintains external partnerships to support the outreach program - 15%
  • Researches, develops, and facilitates outreach program content and materials - 10%
  • Delivers outreach program content and materials to community members - 30%
  • Leads the implementation of programs, policies, and procedures through oversight of day-to-day activities for program staff and student and community volunteers - 10%

Compensation:

Minimum Salary: $50,000/year

Required Qualifications:

At least one year of professional outreach experience and customer service experience. Experience working with the public educating and communicating scientific information is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated skills in website maintenance.
  • Demonstrated skills in planning, promotion, and logistics of events.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage demanding workflow and competing deadlines; initiate, manage, and complete complex projects with minimal supervision; and attend closely to detail and process.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting with colleagues, constituents, and partners with varying backgrounds, interests, and abilities in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
  • Demonstrated success in launching and maintaining collaborations and partnerships.
  • Demonstrate high level of computer proficiency and ability to use database, spreadsheet, web conference, presentation, and word processing software applications.
  • Demonstrate ability to cooperate and collaborate with professional partners.
  • Demonstrate ability to commit to the highest level of professionalism, ethical standards, confidentiality and sensitivity to information and records.
