Job Summary:

The Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention (WRAP) study conducts research in the field of aging and dementia, and seeks to establish effective prevention, treatment and diagnostic tests for Alzheimer's disease in diverse populations. The research nurse practitioner (NP) has an integral role within the WRAP study and serves as a clinical expert within a research team. The research nurse practitioner assists Principal Investigators (PIs) and Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) with the operations of clinical research studies, under the guidelines of research protocols and UW Madison policies. This NP role will be primarily based in WRAP's Milwaukee location.

The research nurse practitioner operates within a larger team and often works closely with scientists, program managers, participant recruitment specialists, schedulers, study coordinators and students. The NP will perform physical and neurological exams; interpret research blood test results, cognitive testing results and electrocardiograms; evaluate serious adverse events; maintain participant records; participate in diagnostic consensus case conferences; provide on-call and back-up support to investigators as requested; and provide advice to participants regarding their health concerns, with special attention to creating a culturally safe environment for the participant. The NP will perform duties such as participate in blood draws, write up clinical summaries and enter research data, and complete one-on-one sessions with participants to communicate the participants' results to them, advise helpful practices, and other duties as assigned. The NP may be trained to perform lumbar punctures or other procedures.

The research nurse practitioner will participate in the recruitment of subjects for the WRAP study and related research studies through attendance of outreach events. They may have opportunities to speak with supporting organizations about Alzheimer's disease research and current findings. The incumbent will communicate and coordinate with multiple research related departments, including Office of Clinical Trials, UW Human Subjects IRB, Pharmaceutical Research Center and the Clinical Research Unit for study start up, maintenance, and closure. The incumbent may work on studies affiliated with the WRAP study and possibly with industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated trials.

Responsibilities:

Provides health care services under a collaborative care agreement with physician. Educates patients, develops and evaluates care plans, and prescribes medications and treatments in support of patient health and well-being.
  • 20% Assesses, diagnoses, and treats illnesses, and manages chronic health problems
  • 20% Develops, implements, collects data, and evaluates primary health care services as directed by individual care plans
  • 5% Develops individualized care plans based on medical assessments in accordance with medical best practices and established rules and regulations
  • 25% Educates patients and their support systems on how to manage conditions and to promote the health and well-being of patients and those around them
  • 10% May provide expertise, training, and guidance to the community, peers, and/or students
  • 10% Collaborates with research teams to develop and implement study visit protocols, including evaluation of serious adverse events, prescreening medical records for inclusion/exclusion criteria, and interpreting lab, imaging, and ECG results
  • 10% Participates in community outreach and engagement activities such as blood pressure screening events, coffee and chat mini-series events, information sessions, or other engagement opportunities as they arise.

Master's Degree
The successful candidate must be a graduate from an accredited nursing school. The successful candidate must also be certified or be eligible to obtain certification to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Wisconsin.

Qualifications:

Experience or training to work with geriatric patients and with individuals from underserved communities is preferred.
Experience in clinical research studies and performing procedures is also preferred.

The applicant should have the ability to work both independently and cooperatively within the clinical research team.

License/Certification:

Work Type:

Part Time: 60% - 80%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $100,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The expected salary range (full-time base, prorated for appointment percentage) for this position is $100,000 up to $110,000 for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.

Additional Information:

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship and TN visas.
