Job Duties:

POSITION : A full-time, professional learning center specialist position is available in the Academic Skills Center beginning January 12, 2026. The anticipated starting annual salary is $50,000. Working collaboratively with colleagues, the learning specialist supports peer educators in a variety of roles. This position may coordinate peer tutoring, academic coaching, Supplemental Instruction, or first-year success programming, depending on the needs of the center. All learning specialists also teach a student success course each semester in addition to their coordinator responsibilities. The Academic Skills Center supports student learning across the curriculum, with the strongest representation in the sciences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Master’s degree

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Strong interpersonal skills, including a mindset and an ability to work with students across lines of difference

Prior success teaching, tutoring, or coaching

Commitment to the mission of the Academic Skills Center

Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working in a college learning center

College teaching experience

Supervisory experience or leadership experience

Undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, or related field

DUTIES :

Coordinate and manage academic support programs

  • Oversee the work and development of student employees
  • Provide leadership for at least one academic support program or initiative
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to recruit students and market the center
  • Assess student learning and program effectiveness
  • Develop learning resources and training materials
  • Provide feedback and support to colleagues coordinating related support programs

Teach student success courses

  • Teach a course each semester for either first-year students (GEN 110) or students on probation (GEN 201)
  • Contribute to the development of the center’s curriculum
  • Promote effective and inclusive learning practices
  • Assess student learning and adjust methods and materials to align with learning objectives
  • Complete attendance and progress reports as required by the university and send other types of communication, as needed, to raise awareness of academic concern and encourage support for students.

Provide direct support to students

  • Meet individually with students to assess academic progress and support needs. Make appropriates referral to campus resources best suited to provide needed support (e.g., counseling services, advising, Dean of Students, etc.).
  • Provide continued support to former GEN students and student employees, as appropriate, including making referrals, serving as a reference, and providing letters of recommendation.

Contribute to the development of the center and the campus community

  • Development relationships with university faculty and staff along with ASC colleagues and student employees to learn about students’ experiences and academic support needs, share perspectives, and collaborate on initiatives to support student success.
  • Contribute to the ASC’s ongoing development and collaborate with colleagues to identify and implement evidence-based practices for continuous improvement
  • Seek out and engage in professional development opportunities.

THE UNIT : The Academic Skills Center (ASC) is the primary student learning center on campus, comprised of six professional staff members and over forty student employees. We empower students to grow as reflective and resilient learners by facilitating peer-learning opportunities, providing academic success instruction, and creating welcoming environments for learning. Our center teaches peer educators how to facilitate learning, and we teach learning strategies that can be applied across disciplines. We currently offer peer tutoring in fifteen subjects, peer academic coaching, a robust Supplemental Instruction program, and academic success courses for incoming students and students on probation.
