TheUWMC Montlake Perinataldepartment has an outstanding opportunity for aPART TIME 60% FTE (24HRS/WK), PATIENT SERVICES SPECIALIST.
The PSS provides patient-focused care through the use of customer service strategies, and communicates effectively with medical staff, patients, visitors, and other medical center departments to facilitate patient care. This PSS position will be split between two units, 6SA Medical Oncology ICU and 5E Surgical Intensive Care unit.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Facilitates patient admissions, transfers, and discharges
Assembles patient chart for admission, transfer, or discharge
Maintains medical records, collates departmental records, adds new forms to records, and flags/alerts healthcare team members to missing forms, consent signatures, and other requirements
Obtains and returns records to Patient Data Services
Communicates with other departments readiness for patient procedures, tests, or exams and facilitates appropriate transportation and paperwork
Facilitates prompt and smooth discharge of the patient by sending prescriptions to pharmacy, putting together the medical record information for the receiving facility, and communicating all of it to the assigned nurse and charge nurse
Accesses computer systems to obtain patient data and perform clerical functions
Has ability to recognize priority information and duties, respond appropriately, and maintain patient safety and smooth unit operations
Demonstrates proficiency in the use of communication devices on the unit (telephone, fax, email, etc.). Continually identifies department when answering the telephone, speaks in a confident, friendly manner that conveys a positive reception
Directs calls to appropriate staff in a timely manner
Receives, records, and distributes accurate patient information and diagnostic results to appropriate staff
Maintains awareness of others and greets patients, family, visitors, and staff in manner that conveys a positive reception
Effectively commands medical terminology and pharmacology
Completes annual review requirements (fire/safety, infection control, and other as appropriate)
Accurately processes lab specimens
Validates Parking for the family members, patients, and visitors
Update Electronic Media boards of the unit
Participates in the development/testing/implementation of new organizational systems for the unit or department
Identified by others as exceptional in coordinating/prioritizing, delegating and multi-task orientation; performance reflects extra care and attention
Follows up on projects, orders, and/or requisitions to ensure completion
Acts as a resource for staff
Acknowledged by other staff to be a role model in courteous communication (in-person, telephone, etc.) with health care team members, visitors, patients, and family
Acknowledged by staff as an expert in unit and Medical Center services and how to access them
Participates in interdepartmental efforts to facilitate a safe environment
Understands and follows hospital and departmental protocol for emergencies and disasters
Takes immediate action to address environmental, equipment or engineering issues that present a potential safety risk
Functions within safety, infection-control, emergency and equipment guidelines
Demonstrates dignity and respect for the values, lifestyles, age, spiritual needs, and/or cultural diversity of other staff members, patients, family, and visitors
Acts as an advocate for patients and families through such activities as assisting them with locating appropriate staff to address their concerns and safeguard patient's privacy and confidentiality
Provide additional service for those who have been inconvenienced or who may need special assistance. Contacts Patient Relations office when appropriate
Reports when illegal/unethical/unprofessional practice of another member of the health team occurs
Demonstrates awareness of age-specific competencies when interacting with patients and family
Promotes and contributes to the development of teamwork in the service and working relationships between the service and other departments and disciplines
Maintains a professional manner at work
Demonstrates reliability in work attendance.
Practices cost containment by ordering and using forms and supplies in a cost-effective manner
Maintains/improves knowledge and skills related to medical terminology, policies/procedures, and medical center services
Participates in and supports quality assessment and improvement activities
Demonstrates responsibility for own professional growth through pursuit of work-related experiences and educational opportunities
Responds positively when learning needs are identified and accepts responsibility for seeking education
Attends and participates in professional development and continuing education programs which directly affect practice and improve unit operations
