Job Summary
The Outdoor Adventures Trip Leader position is an additional job/responsibility. In order to be eligible for hire, one must apply for the OA Rental Attendant position or The Summit Climbing Wall or currently be a member of the Outdoor Adventures staff. OA Trip Leaders are responsible for the physical and emotional safety of OA Trip Participants while leading human-powered outdoor recreation trips for Campus Recreation Services. Trip leaders are additionally responsible for trip logistics, risk management/mitigation and instruction of outdoor pursuits. Most trips are on weekends and require staff to work as early as Friday mornings until late Sunday evenings. In addition to the actual trips, there are several hours of work needed in the weeks leading up to the trip that involve planning, purchasing food, prepping gear, and checking off technical skills.
Additional job duties require all trip leaders to serve as an OA Rental Attendant or Summit Climbing Wall Specialist. These OA positions consist of customer service, equipment rental, point of sale, equipment storage, repair and maintenance of equipment, risk management, clinic instructions, and climbing wall knowledge. Outdoor Adventures staff must be friendly and enthusiastic about the outdoors. They must have good written and verbal communication skills, possess patience and provide excellent customer service.
Campus Recreation Services is located at the George S. Eccles Student Life Center, which connects student Life with academic life to create an engaged campus community. Amenities include a 50-meter pool, indoor and outdoor leisure pools, large indoor hot tub/spa, 320-yard indoor running track, bouldering and 4-story climbing wall, 5 sport courts, racquetball courts, 4 group fitness studios, and a combative room. Additional amenities include a Shake Smart, four sand volleyball courts and an outdoor basketball court.
Student Affairs is comprised of over 20 departments and is focused on supporting student well-being and success with the ultimate goal of assisting students in discovering their passion, people, and purpose. To that end, we aim to foster an environment that encourages employees to embrace innovative service delivery methods to best meet the needs of our students. As a result, students have the opportunity to participate in the creation of campus culture, collaboratively working alongside professional staff, student leaders, and academic partners.
Student Affairs is committed to the grounding of our programs, procedures, and policies in the tenets of anti-racism and inclusion. We recognize the continued importance of education and accountability that promote equity and social justice. Our expectation is that all employees are engaged in this work to create a welcoming environment that supports the success of both students and staff and ensures they have the opportunity to be fully incorporated into university life.
