For in-person roles: This is an in-person role, and the successful candidate must be willing to relocate within California, preferably within 25 miles of the (City) Pacific campus.

For online roles: While this is an online position, Pacific’s three campuses are within California and its faculty and staff are mostly California residents. For administrative purposes, California residents are preferred. Out of state hires must be approved either by the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs (for academic hires) or by the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President for Finance and Operations.

Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Director of Public Safety, performs various assignments related to the safety and security of the University of the Pacific’s San Francisco Campus.

Essential Functions

Assumes fixed post assignments in the following areas of the University of the Pacific’s San Francisco Campus:

Clinic/Visitor Entry

  • Monitor patient/clinic access points.
  • Activate entry for authorized individuals as needed.
  • Respond to dispatch control instructions, alarms, and emergencies as required.

Provide information to visitors about security matters and handicap parking.

Main Entrance

  • Monitor controlled access employee entrance to ensure only authorized personnel are admitted.
  • Respond to dispatch control instructions, alarms, and emergencies as required.
  • Provide information to students, staff, and faculty regarding public safety matters.
  • Provide building access and security for campus events.

Command Center

  • Monitor building entry points and activity by closed circuit camera system to ensure safety and security of building occupants.
  • Alert officers of any emergency or situations requiring response.
  • Maintain closed circuit camera systems, security radios and building alarm systems; perform system checks on alarm, access control systems and communication devices, as scheduled.
  • Create/replace and activate access control cards for new or existing faculty, staff and students.

Foot Patrol

  • Lock/unlock doors and check secured doors as scheduled. Ensure that doors are properly secured; safeguard property of the University’s campus.
  • Respond to dispatch control instructions, alarms, and emergencies as required.
  • Check building and property for safety hazards and report maintenance issues and emergency repairs.
  • Patrol the interior and perimeter of the campus; observe, take appropriate action and report any unusual occurrence or circumstance.
  • Provide lost and found and other support services for students, employees, and visitors.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of Public Safety or their designee.

This position serves as Campus Security Authority (CSA) as outlined by the Clery Act. CSAs have federally mandated responsibilities to report crimes that are reported them.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Criminal law, laws of arrest, search and seizure.
  • Basic Microsoft Word, Outlook, and general computer skills.

Ability To:

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Analyze situations accurately and make appropriate decisions in a timely manner to emergencies or routine service.
  • Provide clear and concise instructions to others in emergency situations.
  • Observe and report facts/information accurately; prepare accurate written reports.

Experience:

  • Minimum of one year working in an armed BSIS licensed security guard capacity.
  • Experience operating computerized security systems such as video cameras and access control devices.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Licenses:

  • Current BSIS Security Guard Certification.
  • Current BSIS Firearms Permit.
  • Pepper Spray and baton certification (or within 6 months of hire).
  • Current CPR Certification (or within 6 months of hire).

Working Conditions:

  • Position is full-time, forty (40) hours per week, overtime may be assigned as needed.
  • Incumbent must be available to work varying shifts to include evenings, weekends, holidays or in the event of an emergency.
  • Occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens may be reasonably anticipated. Personal protective equipment will be provided to reduce or eliminate exposure to routine limited infectious agents.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to:

  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and communicate in a collegial and professional manner.
  • A completed BSIS Firearms Assessment, highlighting the applicant’s appropriate judgment, restraint and self-control for the purposes of carrying and using a firearm while performing armed security guard duties.

Experience:

  • Experience working within an educational or health care environment.

Education:

  • College-level courses in security, criminal justice, or public safety highly desirable.
  • 832 Post Training.

Licenses:

  • .40 caliber firearm certification

Other:

  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative but not definitive of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Requires extensive sitting, walking and/or standing.
  • Occasional running and climbing of stairs.
  • Frequent bending, stretching, and reaching required.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling up to 130 pounds in the event of an emergency.

Hiring Range $29.50 - 35.45 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. Background Check Statement
