Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Presidential Communication is responsible for creating and supporting a wide range of communications on behalf of the President, including research, letters, speeches, presentations, video messages, social media, and other materials to support the communication priorities of the President. The Assistant Director of Presidential Communications will serve as a staff member in the Office of the President and will report to the Senior Advisor to the President for Communications and Operations.

Description of Job Duties

  • Draft formal written communications from the President, including messages to the campus community, alumni, trustees, and parents; articles and correspondence in University publications and external publications; and informal and formal correspondence with individuals.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive communications plans focused on the President’s priorities and undertake special projects relating to communications strategy.
  • Draft speeches, remarks, and talking points that the President uses in any forum, including speeches to large groups, remarks at events for faculty, donors, parents, or students, and talking points in small settings on and off UIW campuses.
  • Assist in message creation and collaborate with the Senior Advisor on ways to assist the President with opportunities to articulate the University’s public image.
  • Provide support to organizers of special events designed to highlight the University when the President will play a prominent role.
  • Develop relationships and outreach opportunities with various constituencies and thought leaders across the campus and externally in order to field input and better communicate with the University community.
  • Attend and participate in necessary meetings to assist in coordinating all circumstances in which the President will be expected to make remarks or play a public role.
  • Ensure the accuracy of all facts and details in speeches, statements and quotes issued on behalf of the President and official statements on behalf of the President’s Office.
  • Conduct research regarding topics, individuals, and issues to ensure that all presidential remarks are informed and current and reflect most favorably on the President and the University.
  • Maintain the Office of the President web and digital content and ensure that the President’s website and web assets are updated and of high quality.
  • Assist in managing the President’s social media presence including drafting and posting messages.
  • Assist in supporting media engagement management and efforts.
  • Provide in-person support at President’s events or events where the President may play a significant role.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise strict discretion with sensitive issues and documents.
  • Familiarity with academic styles of writing and citation, areas of research, current topics in academia.
  • Superb writing skills with ability to capture the distinctive voice of the President across a multitude of platforms, creating clear communications with a spirit of originality, collegiality, and keen understanding of the University Mission across a range of media and for a broad spectrum of audience types.
  • Excellent editing, proofreading, and presentation skills.
  • Professional demeanor and character to consistency act with diplomacy, tact, and discretion.
  • Strong organizational skills to be able to prioritize and manage several projects simultaneously and on short timelines.
  • Ability to display initiative and work collaboratively, effectively, and respectfully.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and business relations.
  • Excellent skill in managing politically sensitive issues within a complex higher education environment.
  • Strong critical thinking and interpersonal skills.
  • Expert level with MS Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook, as well as the Internet; ability to effectively learn and use communications related platforms.
  • Proficiency in utilizing various content creation and management platforms; working knowledge of social media platforms.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA .

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, Journalism, English, or other relevant field. Note that education in alternate field with significant professional experience beyond what is required will be considered.

Required Work Experience

Five (5) years of professional experience in communication, journalism, and/or writing/editing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Communication, Journalism, or English.
  • Spanish proficiency.
  • Experience in higher education.

Required Certifications, Licenses Or Registrations

Must have a valid driver’s license, driving record that is insurable by UIW insurance carrier, and be at least 21 years of age, as required to drive for UIW .

Work Hours

Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm with extended hours as needed, especially in the planning, execution, and working of events, to meet departmental goals.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 20lbs of office/event materials.
  • Ability to reach overhead, bend, and squat to retrieve office/event/relevant materials.
  • Ability to push/pull event/other carts holding up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to actively engage in events for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to regularly move about campuses and event venues to actively engage attendees, as well as attend meetings on and off multiple campus locations.
