Brief Description of Duties 

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) Program Coordinator is responsible for providing programmatic leadership, implementation, evaluation, and reporting for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the areas of nutrition education, food safety and physical activity for selected sites in the community.  Regular working hours will sometimes require evenings and weekends based on the class schedules for the participating groups.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaches and evaluates nutrition and food safety lessons and food demonstrations from SNAP-Ed Curricula and other approved nutrition education materials.
  • Recruits and trains teachers and other community volunteers (train-the-trainer) to carry out planned objectives of the SNAP-Ed programs.
  • Holds and attends meetings and conferences as needed to assist the Senior Program Coordinator and volunteers in implementing the SNAP-Ed program and its specific projects.
  • Maintains effective working relationship with other extension staff (internally and externally), to provide knowledge of new technology, best practices, and evidence-based information as well as assistance in programming methods and procedures.
  • Prepares reports for submission to the Senior Program Coordinator and Director of the Center for Nutrition, Diet and Health.
  • Maintains current professional competence through participation in SNAP-Ed, CNDH, and CAUSES staff development programs and professional development opportunities sponsored by professional organizations.
  • Cooperates with other program units in planning and implementing interdisciplinary programs.
  • Engages with the District of Columbia schools to start SNAP-Ed programs and to implement SNAP-Ed program activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • The incumbent is required to hold a bachelor’s degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, public health nutrition, health education, or related focus area of the position, granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university. Preferred completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
  • Experience (1-2 years) working with individuals who come from low socio-economic backgrounds.
  • A valid driver’s license and vehicle desirable to travel and transport education equipment within the city for lessons.
  • Preferred fluency speaking and writing in Spanish.
