The University of Texas at El Paso College of Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow position in the Metabolic Nutrition and Exercise Research (MiNER) Laboratory, Department of Kinesiology. This role offers the opportunity to work on translational research projects focused on skeletal muscle metabolism in the context of diabetes and metabolic diseases. Our lab is dedicated to understanding how diet and exercise influence insulin action, lipid metabolism, and mitochondrial function in humans. By leveraging our access to a predominantly Hispanic population, we aim to develop effective prevention and treatment strategies for obesity and type 2 diabetes. The successful candidate will engage in clinical research, contribute to grant writing, prepare manuscripts for publication, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
Essential Functions:
- Design and implement translational research studies on skeletal muscle metabolism and metabolic diseases.
- Conduct clinical trials with human subjects, including assessments of insulin sensitivity, substrate utilization, and body composition using state-of-the-art techniques.
- Prepare and submit IRB applications, ensuring compliance with ethical research practices.
- Collect, analyze, and manage complex research data sets.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication and present research findings at professional conferences.
- Contribute to grant writing efforts.
- Assist with the overall management and coordination of ongoing research projects within the MiNER Lab.
- Collaborate with and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research methodologies and project execution.
Job Requirements:
Successful candidates will have earned a Ph.D. in a relevant field (such as Health Sciences, Kinesiology, Public Health, or Biomedical Sciences) by the appointment date. Applicants must demonstrate a proven track record in conducting clinical trials with human subjects, particularly those focused on diabetes and metabolic diseases. In addition, candidates should exhibit technical proficiency in assessing key metabolic parameters, including insulin sensitivity, substrate utilization, and body composition.
Candidates should have a strong record of research productivity, including successful internal and external grant writing effort, effective manuscript preparation/publications in peer-reviewed venues. Familiarity with Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes and regulatory compliance is also required, along with robust skills in the collection, analysis, and management of complex research data.
Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary research teams and a strong commitment to translational research. While the primary focus is on clinical research, experience in both clinical and bench research settings will be viewed favorably.

This position is funded through the Regents' Research Excellence Program and is contingent upon availability of funds. The initial salary is competitive, based on qualifications and experience, and comes with excellent fringe benefits.
