Hiring Department: National Security Institute

Reports To: Guard Supervisor for National Security Institute

Job Location: El Paso, Texas (On Site)

Posting End Date: Open until filled. This posting may close once a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received.

Hours: 40 hours per week, rotating Shift Schedule. Flexibility is required to accommodate mornings, evenings, and weekends for this position.

FLSA status: Non-exempt

Earliest Start Date: As soon as possible.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Note: This is a full time, temporary, contingent upon availability of funds position with a possibility of extension and is eligible for full benefits, including medical, dental, and vision.

Position Summary


Provides essential security support for the Controlled Space Enterprise Department. The role involves monitoring and responding to security threats, alarms, and emergencies to protect employees, secure facilities, and safeguard classified information.

Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Information Security:

• Safeguard classified and controlled unclassified information.

Emergency Response:

• Immediately respond to alarms.

Access Control:

• Perform effective access control to ensure only authorized persons and items enter or depart the premises.

• Identify employees and visitors, check badges, and issue temporary badges.

Inspection and Monitoring:

• Conduct random inspections.

• Perform security checks and report actual or potential safety and fire hazards.

• Observe and report conditions or situations that may lead to increased risks or other dangers.

Compliance:

• Ensure strict compliance with established procedures related to emergency response or urgent actions.

Facility Protection:

• Assist in other aspects of facility protection through assigned duties required to support departmental operations.

• Perform roles and functions as part of a larger team.

Customer Service:

• Interact with employees, visitors, and guests to provide courteous, professional assistance to personnel on site.

Documentation:

• Complete various log entries and forms as official records and documentation.

• Provide telephonic and email notifications relevant to departmental security status.

Communication:

• Answer incoming telephone calls.

Technology Use:

• Effectively operate computer systems, utilize email, monitor closed circuit video equipment, operate fax machine, and use the departmental public address system.

Mail Handling:

• Receive and document after-hour mail deliveries.

Training:

• Complete mandatory and recurring training related to the position to maintain proficiency and improve capability.

Shift assignments may vary including weekend, overnight and holiday shifts.

Complies with all State and University policies.

Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Required Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or GED.

and

Experience:

Must be a United States or naturalized citizen.

Able to obtain and maintain SECRET government clearance.

Position may require candidates to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET government clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or military service.

More than one year of experience as a guard or security officer.

Formal training in law enforcement or military training.

Relevant security certifications (e.g., CPR, First Aid, Security Guard License).

Eligibility for immediate access to classified information.


Pre-hire contingencies upon conditional offer of employment:

  • Must be a United States or naturalized citizen.
  • Able to obtain and maintain SECRET government clearance.

U.S. Citizenship: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information, job offer will be contingent on selected applicant applying for access to classified information within 45 days of job offer and receiving at least interim access to classified information within 90 days of the application being submitted or based on USG processing time. Eligibility for access must continue without interruption during employment in this position. Failure to maintain required security clearance during employment will be subject to immediate termination. If any of the aforementioned conditions cannot be meet or maintained within the first 179 days of employment employee is subject to termination under the 180-probation period.

Must demonstrate the physical and mental capacity to effectively fulfill the essential functions of a Guard at The University of Texas at El Paso. A comprehensive background investigation must be successfully completed. The ability to provide credible and reliable testimony in a court of law is required.
