What are the responsibilities and job description for the Adjunct Lecturer in Law - Contemporary Name, Image & Likeness position at University of Southern California?
USC Gould School of Law is seeking an instructor to develop curriculum for and teach our new online Contemporary Name, Image & Likeness class. We will be developing this class for the first time in our online programs as part of our new Master of Studies in Law in Sports Law and Negotiation degree program.
The instructor will create curriculum with our team of instructional designers, spending a few hours/week from June through December 2026. The instructor will then teach the course during the Spring 2027 semester, from January to April 2027. We expect that the instructor will spend approximately 10-15 hours per week on course instruction, including timely grading of assignments and communication with students.
Courses will be developed and taught fully online; lecturers may work from any location. Candidates should have a strong professional background in the field, preferably with law school and/or online teaching experience.
Contemporary Name, Image & Likeness (LAW-755, 2 units)
This course will examine the current state of Name, Image and Likeness (“NIL”) in college athletics, including the legal basis for college athletes’ ability to secure representation and enter into paid collective agreements, whether college athletes should be considered employees and whether athletic departments will be able to pay athletes directly. We will also look at college sports and the impact of NIL through various lenses, including higher education, athletic departments, athletes, their representatives, and the National Labor Relations Board.
USC reserves the “Adjunct” appointment for faculty teaching less than full-time at USC, who are employed full-time in a primary profession or career elsewhere. Adjunct faculty typically teach only one course per year but, in exceptional cases, may teach one course per semester, if approved by the dean.
To ensure compliance with federal, state or local regulatory requirements as well as university policy and procedures, Adjunct Lecturers are required to complete specific training requirements as a condition of employment. Adjuncts Lecturers must complete mandated training by a required deadline. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination, in accordance with the Faculty Handbook. Trainings that are required for all faculty and staff include USC’s Harassment Prevention Training at the time of hire and every two years thereafter, USC’s Integrity and Accountability Code Training at the time of hire, Information Security training annually, and Workplace Violence Prevention Plan training annually. A variety of other trainings may be required based on specific job responsibilities.

The base salary range for this position is $2,433.66 - $6,500.00 per semester.
