Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
This position will play a critical role in the Institute’s tick-borne disease research program, particularly by serving as the Institute’s first grant-funded study focusing specifically on human infections. This position’s primary responsibilities will involve overseeing and coordinating a new hospital-surveillance study. Their direct responsibilities will evolve, with earlier years focusing on project start-up, middle years focusing on project execution, and later years focusing on study closure activities. General responsibilities will include daily operational oversight, managing active participant recruitment and associated data, while working with faculty leadership to publish study findings, present preliminary and final results at scientific conferences, and design prospective grant applications/studies. This position will directly support the University’s mission of research excellence by supervising high-quality data collection for an NIH-funded clinical translation institution-level grant and laying the foundation for prospective, collaborative clinical studies.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 1 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or related fields with 2 years of professional work experience in clinical or population health epidemiology studies.
  • Strong working knowledge of vector-borne diseases;
  • Solid background working on participant recruitment, clinical epidemiology methods, and public health surveillance procedures;
  • Working knowledge of field sampling design and executing these designs in real-world settings;

  • This position requires professionalism, including the following attributes: punctuality, integrity, conflict resolution, continuous learning, productivity, empathy, ability to work in a team environment, and flexibility.
  • A strong knowledge of vector-borne disease clinical manifestations, tick-borne disease pathology, undifferentiated febrile patient surveillance approaches, and emerging pathogen diagnostic methodologies.

Identifies and recruits eligible participants across hospital settings, including emergency departments, inpatient units, and outpatient clinics. Conducts prescreening, coordinates with treating clinicians, obtains informed consent under IRB-approved protocols, and ensures sensitivity to participant needs to support strong recruitment and retention.

Collects standardized clinical data, biospecimens, and epidemiologic exposure information. Ensures proper labeling, processing, and shipment of samples following biosafety and chain-of-custody protocols. Enters and verifies clinical and laboratory data, maintains case report forms, updates study databases, and tracks enrollment metrics, follow-up visits, and data queries for accuracy and completeness.

Coordinates day-to-day study operations, including scheduling, documentation, and maintenance of study records in compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and sponsor requirements. Serves as the central point of contact for clinical departments, laboratories, collaborators, and public health partners. Facilitates communication on enrollment, sample logistics, and protocol updates; participates in research meetings; and contributes to protocol amendments.
