Responsibilities
Provides specialized testing and support for the laboratory section. Performs complex technical assignments, which are broadly outlined and require theoretical insight and interpretation. Exercises a high degree of skill and judgement and an understanding of the principles and methodologies of cytogenetics processing. Responsible for instrument maintenance/standardization, daily quality control, and adherence to all laboratory/University policies.
Essential Functions
- Completes morphologic microscopic analysis and karyotyping of a variety of specimens, including amniotic fluids and chorionic villus samples, pre-conceptual and pediatric bloods and products of conception.
- Completes microscopic analysis, including complex leukemic bone marrows and tumors for the detection of specific chromosome aberrations associated with various kinds of neoplasia. Performs Fluorescent In-Situ Hybridization (FISH) microscope analysis.
- Provides educational support and specialized training within the laboratory section.
- Performs and documents instrument preventative maintenance as scheduled or as needed.
- Performs and documents instrument troubleshooting as needed.
- Records results of patient sample analysis using computer/instrument interface options.
- Adheres to quality control/quality assurance protocols.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, biochemistry, or biology and advanced certificate of completion at a NYS designated program required
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience
- NYS Licensed or eligible for NYS licensure in Clinical Laboratory Technology or a NYS Restricted License in Cytogenetics upon hire required
