SUMMARY:
Spider Management Company, LLC (SMC), is a registered investment advisor located in Richmond, Virginia. Founded in 2001, SMC provides investment management services to Endowments and Foundations, one of which is the University of Richmond. Spider presently manages the $3.5 billion Endowment of University of Richmond and $2.5 billion of assets for 25 other Endowments and Foundations. Spider manages a diversified portfolio, including both traditional and alternative investments, that aims to provide strong returns for the Endowments and Foundations it supports.
Spider’s analyst program is anticipated to be three years in length and is intended to prepare the appropriate candidate for a career in the asset management industry. As generalists on the investment team, the primary function of the analysts is to provide analytical and research support across the portfolio. This broad exposure across asset classes, investment strategies and geographies, and operational due diligence is designed to provide the candidate with a holistic understanding of the asset management industry. As the analysts move through the program, they will be expected to train and mentor incoming analysts as well as take a greater role in manager sourcing and due diligence. At the end of year three, our hope would be for the analysts to leave with a sense of where the next step in their careers should be, and have built a network and deep knowledge in that space.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Investment Analyst will become familiar with all aspects of the investment process and Spider Management Company’s business. The candidate will be involved in manager sourcing and due diligence, monitoring current holdings, reporting (for both internal and external review) as well as other tasks for the operations and investor relations teams as needed.
Key responsibilities include:
Portfolio Monitoring
- Review performance of existing portfolio managers
- Regular correspondence with managers, including participating in meetings, quarterly calls, travel for annual meetings, etc.
- Maintain databases and issue monthly/quarterly reports across the firm
- Build models to assess manger performance
- Provide general support to the entire investment process
Manager Sourcing
- Conduct initial meetings with inbound managers
- Maintain regular correspondence with prospective managers in the pipeline
- Assist in analytical due diligence for prospective managers
- Assist in writing and presenting investment recommendations
Market Research
- Keep up to date with geopolitical developments and current events that can affect the markets and our underlying managers
- Monitor the financial news using media sources;
- Conduct macro-related industry/country studies
- Assist in preparing weekly market dashboard reports
Investor Relations/Operations
- Help create materials for the investor relations team
- Liaise for investment team during firm-wide projects
- Perform a wide variety of tasks on an as needed basis
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including advanced Excel skills required
- Ability to multi-task and work independently
- Communications skills, both written and oral
- Fully developed quantitative and analytical skills
- Detail oriented and extremely proactive
- Self-starter
- Self-motivated and process a high level of professionalism and integrity
- Cooperative attitude – must be a team player
- Ability to work on concurrent projects and prioritize accordingly
- Ability to meet challenging deadlines while maintaining a high degree of quality and accuracy

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- University of Richmond graduates
- B.A. or B.S. with strong quantitative background and demonstrated interest in Investment Management
- Excellent academic credentials preferred
- Must be willing to complete CFA designation- sponsored by Spider Management Company
- Must adhere to Spider Management Company’s Code of Ethics policy
WORK HOURS:
- Full-time, exempt position
- 8:30am - 5:00pm Monday-Friday, 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends based on need
