SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Development (AVP), the Director of Gift Planning is responsible for the overall management of the gift planning program at the University of Richmond. Oversees a team consisting of gift planning officers and plays an important role in securing philanthropic resources for Richmond’s upcoming comprehensive campaign. Works in consultation with the AVP to set and achieve annual team activity/fundraising metrics as well as their own.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages and coaches all aspects of the gift planning program, including developing, evaluating and implementing strategies for securing philanthropic resources as well as coordinating gift officer portfolio management. This includes serving as an expert on tax and legal aspects of charitable giving, preparing gift proposals and illustrations, analyzing bequest language, and ensuring planned gifts are accurately received and acknowledged. 
  • Manages an assigned portfolio of highly rated alumni prospects. 
  • Designs and implements gift planning marketing strategies in consultation with University Communications as well as gift planning vendors. 
  • Partners with members of the Development team to identify and inspire donors to maximize their philanthropic support through gift planning vehicles with a particular focus on blended giving. This might include the advent or continuation of educational programming and/or workshops to enhance philanthropic outcomes. 
  • Collaborates closely with Vice President for Advancement, AVP of Development, Development Directors, President’s staff, Deans, and other senior University administrators to coordinate philanthropic engagement and contribute to the overall success of the University of Richmond’s comprehensive campaign. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and coaching skills, along with the ability to work with diverse internal and external constituencies.
  • Knowledge of estate planning and complex gifts.
  • Knowledge of gift planning vehicles (including but not limited to) charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder and lead trusts, and life insurance policies
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, demonstrate an understanding of the ethical principles associated with working in development, and to use discretion in interactions with members of the University of Richmond community.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team environment with a high degree of collegiality; honesty and transparency are two other important abilities.
  • Strong written, communication, organizational, and analytical skills as well as a sense of humor.
  • Demonstrated record of soliciting and closing five, six or seven figure philanthropic gifts.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft office and fund-raising software applications, including database management (The University of Richmond uses BBCRM).

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • A bachelor's degree is required and an advanced degree in law, tax, accounting or another related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 8-10 years of gift planning experience or experience in a related field such as legal, tax or financial planning with a demonstrated track record of success.
  • Management experience is preferred.
  • Experience in a higher education setting is preferred.

WORK HOURS:

  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week with extended hours as necessary
  • Seasonal, evening, and weekend work will be periodically required throughout the year (e.g. Charter Associates events, Homecoming Reunion, etc.)
  • External travel is expected

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 11 (Hiring Range: $120,000.00 - $135,000.00 annually)
