What are the responsibilities and job description for the RBL 75 Laboratory Research Technician position at University of Pittsburgh?
Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.
Med-Center for Vaccine Research (CVR)
This position is responsible for research activities in the Center for Vaccine Research. Incumbent is responsible for research procedures (bench and animal) in Biosafety Level 2 and 3 (BSL2/BSL3) environments with work in the Regional Biocontainment Facility. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, viral plaque assays, real-time PCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, media preparation, cell culture, record keeping, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment. Incumbent will be required to work with small laboratory animals, namely rodents, but may include other species as well. Basic understanding of statistical methods and Microsoft Excel required. Incumbent will be required to have good communication skills and the ability to work independently and as a fully productive, cooperative team member. Strict adherence to BSL2/BSL3 procedures is essential. Position will require some scheduling flexibility in regard to animal observations. This position may require a yellow fever vaccination. This will require successful completion of Department of Justice security clearance for work with Select Agents and Toxins, as required by Federal regulation. This position is eligible for an RBL Premium Payment.
Essential Functions
Must be able to read and comprehend the English language and have normal visual ability with no hearing impairments. Must possess adequate manual dexterity to perform sensitive laboratory including work with a BSL3/ABSL3 environment.
Physical Effort
Position involves frequent movement to various places, occasionally involving heavy equipment and prolonged standing or sitting.
