The University of Pittsburgh is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and student-centered professional for the role of Academic Success Coach on the Student Success Team in the Office of the Provost. Our mission is to “advocate and create opportunities for students by providing a system of academic support to boost retention, persistence, and graduation.”

Under the supervision of the PI/Project Director of the McNair Program, the Academic Success Coach will provide individual and group coaching, assessment, and evaluation to support academic success, a positive student experience, and satisfaction, ensuring student and program retention. They will create and maintain a network of contacts within and external to the University to facilitate student success opportunities. They will also promote and conduct success initiatives and engagement opportunities.

We are seeking an Academic Success Coach to facilitate and plan programming for TRIO McNair Scholars, one of the projects within the Student Success Hub portfolio. Collaboratively, Academic Success Coaches also facilitate university-wide academic sponsored activities, including, but not limited to the Student Academic Success Series and Welcome Week.

Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience serving at-promise student populations, including first-generation, lower-income college students, and/or exploratory students.

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in education, counseling, or related area is preferred. Three (3) years’ experience in advising, academic coaching, student success, retention, and/or support programs or related work required. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, participating in a team environment, giving presentations, and knowledge of MS tools is a plus. Previous experience with student success technology (e.g., EAB) a plus.

Essential Functions

  • Establishes one-on-one relationships with students to support academic success.
  • Facilitates an environment that encourages a sense of belonging.
  • Collaborates with enrollment teams to facilitate a seamless transition into the program.
  • Functions as a member of the Student Success Team and Office of the Provost.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled meetings as needed with Student Success Team and other support/collaborative programs.
  • Develops in-depth knowledge of campus resources in order to connect students, help problem solve, and recognize when to make additional referrals as needed.
  • Coordinates and facilitates program events/workshops focused on student success and optimal learning.
  • Monitors student academic progress and communicates issues with program faculty and advisors as needed.
  • Develops and delivers social engagement and academic success workshops and activities.
  • Becomes knowledgeable of best practices in student success coaching through professional development opportunities, modeling the core values of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Academic Advisor and the Association for the Coaching and Tutoring Profession (ACTP).
  • Partners with communication(s) teams to promote services and programming to students, faculty and staff.
  • Utilizes University student information systems to document and manage student information, with high level of confidentiality.
  • Assists in tracking and processing of student data (e.g., funding, travel, engagement).
  • Creates and administers assessments and other measures to evaluate results of efforts and prepare reports as directed.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Physical Effort

May be required to stand/move for several hours at a time. May be required to move objects up to 50 pounds with or without assistance of equipment.
