The Network Technician supports the network, voice, multimedia, and related access control infrastructure at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville. The position is responsible for the reliable operation, performance, documentation, and security of campus network systems at Layers 1 and 2—encompassing physical infrastructure and switching—with primary ownership of the residential network serving approximately 730 students and campus-wide wireless systems supporting more than 1,500 daily users, and shared responsibility for academic, administrative, and safety-critical systems. Layer 3 routing is managed by Pitt Digital’s network team; this position coordinates with main campus on DHCP reservations, firewall rule requests, network security initiatives, and infrastructure projects. This position participates in scheduled and emergency off-hours maintenance as needed.
Compensation & Benefits: Salary range $60,000-$70,000/annual (37.5 hrs./week), plus an excellent benefits package, including group medical insurance, life insurance, optional vision, and dental insurance; and vacation, sick, personal time, and recess and holidays. Performs advanced telecommunications and maintenance tasks, provides advanced end user support, and serves as point of escalation for complex requests. Configures, installs, and utilizes voice network monitoring and configuration tools. Assists in evaluation and design of voice systems and serves as an occasional team lead for lower-level team members.
Essential Functions
Moderate physical effort required. May be required to stand/move for several hours at a time. May be required to move objects up to 50 pounds with or without assistance of equipment.

Essential Functions
- Primarily responsible for the residential network serving approximately 730 students, performing capacity planning, troubleshooting performance issues, and ensuring a reliable, high-quality connectivity experience around the clock.
- Manage campus Layers 1 and 2 network infrastructure, including physical cabling and connectivity, switches, wireless controllers, access points, Avaya PBX and Teams phones, multimedia connectivity, and campus card access systems across academic and administrative buildings.
- Coordinate with Pitt’s main campus network team and technology vendors on DHCP reservations, firewall rule changes, network security initiatives, and infrastructure upgrade and expansion projects, ensuring timely resolution and consistent alignment with university standards.
- Maintain accurate network documentation, perform configuration backups, and manage firmware updates across switching, wireless, and voice infrastructure.
- Implement and maintain network security controls; monitor network traffic for anomalies; and support security compliance, audits, and incident response in collaboration with central Pitt IT.
- Administer campus-wide wireless infrastructure serving 1,500 daily users, including conducting site surveys, optimizing RF coverage and channel planning, deploying and maintaining access points, and ensuring consistent wireless performance across academic, administrative, and residential spaces.
- Mentor student technology assistants and cross-train with campus IT staff to ensure consistent service coverage and operational continuity.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience.
- Minimum of two years of hands-on experience with enterprise network systems, including operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Experienced working knowledge of Cisco-based switching and wireless platforms, and enterprise networking concepts such as VLANs, IP addressing, DNS, and DHCP.
- Familiarity with wireless site survey methodologies, RF coverage optimization, and channel planning in a high-density enterprise environment.
- Working knowledge of voice and unified communications systems, including Avaya PBX, VoIP, Microsoft Teams phones, and multimedia network connectivity.
