Department Summary
The College of Science at the University of North Texas consists of the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and the interdisciplinary programs Teach North Texas, BioDiscovery Institute, Advanced Environmental Research Institute, and Interdisciplinary Program in Applied and Computational Science. The college offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees in science and mathematics, currently serving more than 4,000 majors. Our faculty are world-class researchers in science and mathematics, and the college faculty and staff work together to provide excellent support to our students in their academic education and professional development. The mission of the College of Science is to provide a supportive, inclusive, and collaborative environment for students, faculty, and staff, integrating a contemporary education in science with the pursuit of research at the forefront of the natural and mathematical sciences.

The Office of Health Professions is committed to helping UNT students create a pathway to health professional programs, such as medical school, dental school, PA school, etc.

Position Overview
Responsible for advising, counseling, and providing professional development to students interested in health careers. Advises pre-health students on the courses required for entry into health professional schools, the timeline for applying to such programs, and the characteristics of a competitive application. Counsels students who are not competitive for health professional programs and explores alternative career paths based on students’ interests and strengths.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
  • Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
  • Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Remains active in professional development.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with advising and/or counseling students interested in health professions.

Experience with advising students on course selection and/or degree plans.

Required License / Registration / Certification

Work Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:00AM-5:00PM . This is a hybrid position that will require you to be in the office on campus 3 days per week after an initial training period. Please note, the initial 90 day training will be 100% on-campus.

Job Duties

o
Advise students in-person, or through e-mail and phone correspondence, on the requirements for health professional schools and the classes necessary for admission.

o
Advise students on how to develop strong applications to health professional schools. Provide professional development for students, which includes conducting mock interviews and reviewing application essays.

o
Counsel students who are not competitive for admission to professional schools; create a strategic plan to become competitive or discuss alternative career paths.

o
Conduct seminars for current and incoming students, including informational sessions, Preview Day, and other various programs throughout the year.

o
Assist with awarding Health Professions scholarships each year.

o
Assist with freshmen and transfer orientations by presenting information about health professions and advising students on their upcoming semester schedules.

o
Write letters of recommendation for students applying to professional schools, post baccalaureate programs, scholarships, and other various programs. Assist with the Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) when necessary.

o
Conduct and assist in the production and dissemination of accurate information for students concentrating in the health professions.

o
Demonstrate an ability to be an effective team member by assisting colleagues when needed; includes serving as a marshal during COS commencement ceremonies.

o
Represent the Office of Health Professions at UNT recruiting events when necessary, on and off campus.

o
Become a member of the health professions advising organizations (NAAHP, SAAHP, and TAAHP). Attend the TAAHP Conference each year.
