Brief Summary of Work for this Position
Teach one or more sections of a Center for Academic Advising course; UNI 101: First-Year Seminar or UNI 201: Transfer Seminar.

The Center for Academic Advising seminar courses are 1-3 credit hour courses designed to support students in optimizing their UNCW Experience. The courses focus on building community, campus resources, academic planning, career exploration, and overall adjustment to UNCW. Information literacy, self-management, and effective academic strategies are core components of these courses.

UNI 101/102: First-Year Seminar is a graduation requirement of all first-year students and meets the Information Literacy competency for University Studies. In the fall semester, UNI 101 is offered as a traditional section, as a part of a Living Learning Community or as a Special Topic course. In the spring semester, UNI101 is offered as a traditional section for First-Year Spring Admit students and Remix sections for students who did not complete the UNI requirement in the fall semester.

UNI 201: Transfer Seminar, focused on supporting transfer and military students, meets the Information Literacy and Exploration Beyond the Classroom competencies for University Studies.

UNI Instructors are expected to teach on-campus, with the majority of classes being between 8:00AM and 4:45PM.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master’s Degree, previous college-level teaching experience, academic advising or student counseling.

If you are currently employed by the university, you must be exempt from overtime to be eligible to teach. Please check with your supervisor if you are unclear about your classification prior to applying.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Previous UNI 101, 102, or 201 teaching experience, experience working with first-year or transfer college students.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Academic Affairs is the central division for implementing the mission of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Through effective academic policies, practices, and programs, it provides leadership for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and creative work as well as service to local, regional, and global communities. The division allocates resources to recruit and retain faculty scholars and to create a learning environment that encourages students. As part of the University’s commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, the Center for Academic Advising was created to provide academic advising and support to UNCW students from the time of their admission until they declare their major, which is usually in their sophomore year. The primary focus of the Center for Academic Advising is to ensure that students make a successful transition to UNCW, are retained in good academic standing, and identify and declare an appropriate major. Through its advisors and curricular offerings, the Center for Academic Advising works with students in their formative semesters to assist them in developing their interests, skills, and talents to the fullest extent.
