Primary Purpose of Department
The Department of University Recreation (UREC) is an integral part of the Health & Wellbeing Unit within Student Affairs. UREC includes facilities, programs, and services designed to empower members of the UNC Charlotte community, with a particular focus on students, to be physically active and develop lifelong health and wellbeing behaviors. The department includes two indoor recreation centers, two field complexes, an outdoor fitness park, sport programs, and fitness programs. UREC seeks to provide a framework for educational, leadership, and development opportunities for students through participation. UREC also provides an exceptional employment experience to more than 250 students that fosters the development of essential career readiness skills.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Program Director for Student Development and Assessment is an essential member of the UREC team, providing leadership to student employee development initiatives and department assessment, with direct supervision of an intern.

The Program Director for Student Development and Engagement provides leadership to student development initiatives for the more than 250 University Recreation student employees. This role manages department wide student development initiatives, including processes and procedures, awards and recognition, trainings, and other professional development opportunities for UREC student employees. The Program Director also provides leadership to department assessment projects and initiatives.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Student Development
  • Lead developmental programs and initiatives for the more than 250 student employees across UREC
  • Supervise an intern for student employee development
  • Chair the UREC Student Training and Development Committee and serve on the UREC Awards and Recognition Committee as a non-voting member
  • Develop and manage student employee learning outcomes and implementation/assessment of outcomes throughout the department
  • Manage and regularly update the student employee manual, including processes and procedures related to hiring, onboarding, accountability, recognition, and other systems standardized at the department level
  • Lead the planning and implementation of staff trainings and other professional development programs for all UREC employees (e.g., all-staff trainings, emerging student leader retreats, etc.)
  • Assist the Director of University Recreation in the planning and implementation of leadership development for student coordinators
  • Work with colleagues to infuse student learning and development into UREC programs and services
  • Collaborate with Career Services, Leadership and Community Engagement, and other University departments and programs to ensure UREC student development initiatives are consistent and connected with other institutional student development and career-readiness initiatives
  • Maintain accurate usage data and regularly assess student development initiatives to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance with university, state, and national standards and best practices
  • Assist in the development, oversight, and analysis of budgets, including expenditures, fees, and other revenue

Assessment Initiatives
  • Lead all department assessment projects
  • Serve as the UREC liaison to Student Affairs Research and Assessment, including representing UREC on the Student Affairs Assessment Committee
  • Work with the director to develop department assessment plans, annual goals, KPIs, etc.
  • Ensure department data is being collected, reported, and distributed accurately and in an ethical manner
  • Create reports and other methods to communicate assessment results internally and externally
  • Generate data for UREC monthly/annual and other reports Department Leadership

Administration
  • Actively participate as a member of the UREC professional staff team, including professional staff team meetings
  • Ensure that the UREC mission is achieved and values are upheld
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of department strategic plans and annual goals/priorities
  • Advocate for UREC and foster campus and community partnerships to advance physical activity and holistic wellbeing

General Administration
  • Attend and actively participate in all mandatory Health & Wellbeing Unit, Student Affairs, and UNC Charlotte meetings and trainings
  • Serve on Health & Wellbeing Unit, Student Affairs, and UNC Charlotte committees and working groups as assigned
  • Actively participate in NIRSA and/or other relevant professional associations
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of University Recreation
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field;
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in recreation, sport management, and/or higher education;
  • Or a combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Master's degree preferred
  • 5 or more years of experience working in collegiate recreation and/or student development
  • A deep understanding of student development theory and experience applying it in a collegiate recreation setting
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated experience in leading student employee development initiatives
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a culture of belonging and well-being

Necessary Certifications/Licenses
* American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED certification
Preferred Certifications/Licenses
