Description of Work

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte recognizes the differentiation of mission, goals, and objectives inherent in the diversity of disciplines represented by its colleges and departments. Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching - Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The David R. Ravin School of Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte seeks a full-time Lecturer in Design and Practice, for a 3-year renewable appointment. The successful candidate will teach across graduate-level Integrated Design studios and undergraduate core and advanced studios, and they will assume a leadership role in our engagement with professional practice, through the accomplishments of their own practice, their ability to offer courses related to practice, and their potential to strengthen and expand our program's engagement with local, regional, and national design firms. UNC Charlotte's Ravin School of Architecture (SoA) was one of the first institutions to offer an Integrated Path to Licensure (IPAL) option. The new Lecturer will play an active role in shaping and administering this evolving program. Depending on qualifications, administrative responsibilities related to IPAL may constitute approximately 10-20% of the faculty workload:

  • Developing coursework, workshops, and events that develop students' understanding of the logic of professional practice.
  • Cultivating new relationships with local practices and professional organizations, such as sponsored studios, course modules, and workshops.
  • Supporting student organizations to create new connections between students and local practitioners.
  • Contributing to the development of new curricular initiatives that integrate the study of Architecture and the study of its related disciplines: Construction Management, Business Administration, Geography, the Arts, and other emerging opportunities across the University.
  • Contributing to the development of General Education courses that expose the broader University population to ways in which design practices contribute to the urban community.

This 9-month position includes teaching and service assignments that accommodate the professional development of the successful candidate, which is expected to include realization of built work and/or recognized unbuilt work that demonstrates the innovative potential of professional practice.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
To apply, a candidate must be a licensed architect with experience in professional practice and hold a professional degree in Architecture from an institution accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), or equivalent. Additionally, they must hold a master's degree (either their professional degree or, if their professional degree is a Bachelor of Architecture, a post-professional degree) and have some teaching experience at the university level.

Candidates with a post-professional degree in Architecture or a related field, and candidates with experience in curricular development are especially welcome to apply.
Necessary Licenses/Certifications
The successful candidate must be a licensed architect.
