About The UNH Upward Bound Summer Academy

The Upward Bound Summer Academy takes place on the campus of the University of New Hampshire where students live in a UNH residence hall, eat at a UNH dining hall, and attend classes in academic buildings throughout the campus. UB teachers are committed to education and to helping young people and have the opportunity to create an experiential curriculum that is both interesting and inspiring.

Academics at Upward Bound

We offer courses in Math, Science, Literature & Composition, as well as Success Seminars (in “life after high school” topics). UB teachers are committed to education and to helping young people and have the opportunity to create an experiential curriculum that is both interesting and inspiring.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Teach two, 90-minute classes and support students during a “lunch & ketchup” period on either a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule (9am-2pm) depending on your subject.
  • Curriculum Design: Students are taking courses in the summer that will help to prepare them for their courses in high school in the fall. So, curriculum designed is based on “what students need to know” to get a jump start on fall classes. We work with teachers to create an experiential curriculum that is both interesting and inspiring.
  • Prepare final student evaluations to help students strengthen their academic performance.
  • Attend pre-summer training and weekly staff meetings during the summer academy.
  • Attend Our No Discount Policy ceremony.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of/Enrolled in an AA/AS/BS/BA program in relevant field.
  • Experience with direct classroom instruction and curriculum design.
  • Desire to help disadvantaged youth succeed.
  • Sensitivity and maturity level to successfully work in a summer academic program with high school aged students
  • Ability to interact with diverse constituencies including program & UNH staff, parents/guardians, and students.
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in direct instruction of high school students.
  • Experience participating in a TRIO, or similar, pre-college program.
  • Experience working with students from low-income backgrounds, multi-ethnic backgrounds and/or who are potential first-generation college graduates.

Compensation Pay Range

$2,600

Please be advised that this position is supported by external sponsor funding. As such, continued employment in this role is contingent upon the availability of those external funds. If, for any reason, the sponsor funding is reduced or discontinued, employment may be subject to modification or termination in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
