Disability Specialists are integral members of the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) Team. Disability specialists develop, plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate services for students with disabilities. This includes helping students throughout the interactive accommodations process, assisting faculty and other UNH personnel in implementing accommodations, providing on-going support to students with complicated accommodation needs, assisting students with technology related needs, and managing specific services such as CART and interpreters. Though disability specialists are assigned to a specific campus or campuses, this position assists in providing support to students and faculty across all UNH campuses.

Duties/Responsibilities

Accommodation Process Management (50%)

  • As outlined within SAS policies and procedures, assist UNH students throughout the interactive accommodation process.
  • Advise students about SAS policies and procedures.
  • Review and evaluate documentation related to students’ disabilities.
  • Meet with students to discuss their accommodation needs and their requests.
  • Based on documentation and student self-report, approve student accommodations and plan as needed.
  • Advise students about relevant campus resources.
  • Support students in communicating accommodations to their instructors.
  • Maintain and update confidential files on each student.
  • Follow-up with students or faculty related to accommodations.

On-Going Student Support (20%)

  • Provide on-going support and coordination of services to UNH students with disabilities across all UNH campuses.
  • Provide coaching and guidance as appropriate.
  • Assist students in connecting to other campus resources.
  • Develop student support resources.

Accommodations Implementation Support (15%)

  • Support faculty in implementing student accommodations.
  • Collaborate with University offices across all campuses.

Additional Office Responsibilities (10%)

Additional Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Research, edit and update office materials.
  • Develop resources with campus partners and relevant stakeholders.
  • Analyze student and other SAS data and prepare regular reports.
  • Regularly attend professional development training related to changes in best practices and legislative changes.
  • Provide support to SAS Team members.

Community Outreach and Advocacy (5%)

  • Act as liaison and advocate with the University Community including faculty and administrators, as appropriate.
  • Present information about the SAS office or other relevant topics to the campus community and/or prospective students

Requirements

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years' experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience in the post-secondary environment working with students with disabilities.
  • Experience working with non-traditional students.
  • Experience working with undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Experience supporting students that are accessing their education both in-person and online.
  • Experience supporting students through the interactive accommodation process.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills for working with students, staff, faculty and campus partners; Strong time management and organization skills to manage multiple cases simultaneously ; Public speaking, presentation, and facilitation skills, with the ability to lead engaging, inclusive, and informative trainings.
  • Demonstrated ability to make timely and well-informed decisions independently in a fast-paced, student-centered environment to include evaluation of situation and anticipating outcomes that support student learning
  • Knowledge of a range of different disabilities and the impact of disability within the context of higher education.
  • Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Act, and other applicable laws.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team-oriented environment.
  • Knowledge and skills related to working within the Microsoft Office tools.
  • Ability to independently travel between campuses. Specific assigned campus or campuses will be discussed during the first week and during the initial development phase. With advanced notice, this may be subject to change.

Compensation Pay Range

$43,710.00 - $77,920.00
