Job Description
The Department of Biology at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a part-time Laboratory Technician (80% FTE; 32 hrs/week). This is a 2-year position managing and maintaining a freshwater fish facility housing Astyanax mexicanus (Mexican tetra). The position is five days per week (32 hrs total), and holiday coverage is required to ensure animal care.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily fish husbandry, including fish health monitoring, breeding, and live food preparation
  • Perform routine facility maintenance, including cleaning and disinfecting tanks, siphoning debris, changing water, and maintaining a clean, organized work environment
  • Maintain and troubleshoot life-support systems, monitor water quality, and respond to emergencies (e.g., power outages, flooding)
  • Maintain and update IACUC protocols, SOPs, and training documentation; liaise with IACUC staff
  • Order and track laboratory supplies, receive deliveries, and assist with onboarding new trainees
  • Communicate with vendors and technical support for facility equipment
  • Participate in ongoing research projects
Required Qualifications
  • Candidate has a Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Candidate has proficiency in Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications
  • Candidate has fish husbandry experience, prior laboratory experience, and familiarity with animal facility operations
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs
  • Ability to stand, bend, and move for extended periods while performing husbandry and cleaning tasks
Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary: $52,652.80 annually (80% FTE), depending on experience
  • Duration: 2 years, with a 1% cost-of-living adjustment in year 2
