Job Description The Department of Anthropology at the University of Nevada, Reno, invites applications for a tenure track position in Historical Archaeology as Assistant Professor. We seek a scholar with a strong theoretical and methodological background in historical archaeology, archaeology of the modern world, and/or archaeology of the recent past. Applicants must demonstrate a research agenda through publications or research plans and potential. Primary geographic specialization is open; we encourage applicants who demonstrate willingness to engage with local communities. The teaching load for this position is 2-2. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student body and to contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus. The successful candidate will join a growing, dynamic, and collegial 4-field anthropology department at the flagship institution of the University of Nevada system. Required Qualifications Ph.D. in Anthropology (preferred) or a closely related field by July 1, 2026, with strong grounding in anthropological theory and archaeological practice Active or emerging research agenda in areas such as community-engaged archaeology, historic preservation, ethnobotany, remote sensing, and/or heritage and identity studies Experience directing archaeological excavations Record of, or demonstrated potential for, publishing in top-tier journals and academic presses Demonstrated excellence or clear promise in teaching Prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in archaeology, including historical archaeology Committed to mentoring students in a robust M.A. and Ph.D. program Preferred Qualifications Evidence of, or potential for, developing field-based research and teaching opportunities, including archaeological field schools Commitment to publicly engaged teaching and research through community partnerships Interest in collaborating with existing or new partners, including UNR programs such as Historic Preservation, Shared History, Desert Research Institute, and Gender, Race, and Identity Potential to contribute to campus archaeology or historical archaeology initiatives in Northern Nevada Compensation Grade Assistant Professor – 9-month, tenure-track To view the salary schedule for this position, please visit: Salary Schedules and select Academic Faculty (9- month).
