Position Summary
The Director of Hockey Strength & Performance Coach works directly with the head coach of each sport to put together a schedule for strength and conditioning workout times for each team. The strength and conditioning coach can work with an entire team during training sessions as well as with individual athletes. The individual must provide expert instruction in the use of weight machines and conditioning equipment and be able to tailor different programs based on the needs of the teams or individual athletes. The Director of Hockey Strength & Performance Coach will manage and teach individual and team physical and conditioning preparation, design and implement evidence-based and data supported strength and conditioning programs to support medical, performance, and technical departments. This position will be a part of a multidisciplinary sports performance team and collaborate with several departments and specialists to ensure the holistic development of the student athlete. This position will directly report to the Sr. Associate AD of Athletic Performance.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement a strength and conditioning program based on injury prevention and performance enhancement for student athletes.
  • Ensure the safe and appropriate use of all equipment with established guidelines while also ensuring inspections and safety of facility and equipment.
  • Instruct and demonstrate proper exercise techniques, drills for speed, conditioning, plyometrics, mobility, and sport-specific athletic enhancement.
  • Assists in the documentation of student athlete’s progress in areas to include but not limited to strength, speed, power and explosion metrics.
  • Implement timely tests and evaluations of assigned programs to determine effectiveness of program.
  • Manage GPS and other sport science equipment, data, and programs to monitor and report player development and manage player conditions during in season, out of season, pre-season, in game, pre-game, and post-game.
  • Produce appropriate reports on sport specific metrics such as team/player loading and injury rehabilitation in collaboration with Sports Medicine, Nutrition, and Mental Health & Performance.
  • Position responsibilities will include maintenance of strength and conditioning equipment and facility and will report directly to the Sr. Associate AD of Athletic Performance.
  • Will be expected to provide input and remain current in sport specific performance/sport science training theories and methodology.
  • Continually update professional knowledge of strength, speed, power training, injury prevention and soccer specific training.
  • Enforce intercollegiate weight room rules and etiquette.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with athletic performance staff, coaches and student athletes, and administration to ensure the safety of our student athletes.
  • Responsible for assisting the head coach with recruiting student athletes.
  • Understand and abide by all external and internal regulations and policies. This includes NCAA, NCHC, Summit League, and national affiliations associated within athletics or other role specific regulations.

  • Understand and abide by universal standards of confidentiality and ethical decision-making.
  • Traveling with the hockey team will be required.
  • Will coach men & women’s golf in strength and performance needs.


Other Responsibilities / Skills:
  • Maintain a seamless line of communication with the Sr. Associate of Athletic Performance regarding the health, welfare, physical or scholastic development of the student-athlete which includes timely reporting and response to inquiries or assignments
  • Daily communication and collaboration with Sports Medicine Staff for rehabilitation and return to play protocols.
  • Communicate and collaborate with strength and performance staff on usage of Baxter Weight Room as well as attend team meetings.
  • Communicate and coordinate with Mental Health and Performance Staff
  • Communicate and coordinate with Dietician/Nutritional staff regarding weight management, proper nutritional habits, and dietary modifications.
  • Collaborate with Head Coaches to ensure optimal player support and performance in season, out of season, and pre-season (summer).
  • Contribute to recruiting efforts and on-campus visits with sport coaches
  • Work an irregular schedule, evenings or Saturday as needed, additional hours during peak times or as required.
  • Some travel between campus locations is required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Duties

Required and Preferred Qualifications

Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in sports science, athletic training, exercise physiology or exercise science or strength and conditioning or related field required.

Required Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the field of sports performance training for athletes preferred
  • Number of years working full time at collegiate or pro level 3
  • Experience working with hockey


Required License/Certification
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or
  • Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC)
  • Additional Certifications: CPR/AED



Required Additional Qualifications:




Preferred Education
Master’s Degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science or Related Field.

Preferred Experience
  • On ice experience


Experience with technology:
  • Catapult- load management technology (analysis of player load data reporting, return to play, practice periodization, performance metrics)
  • VALD- Force decks
  • Velocity-based training, load-velocity profiles, autoregulation
