Department of Psychological Sciences

Job Description

The Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri, a public land-grant research university in Columbia, invites applications for a full-time (non-tenure-track, NTT) Assistant Teaching Professor to contribute to our new Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience program beginning August 2026. The position is a nine-month appointment and teaching responsibilities are during the fall and spring semesters.

The Department of Psychological Sciences is a vibrant and welcoming environment that supports the success of our students, faculty, and staff. We are committed to excellence in undergraduate education, to the students it serves through degrees, minors and certificates, and to the campus general education curriculum. Many of our courses are taught face-to-face, although hybrid and online courses are an essential part of our semester schedule. We offer the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees in Psychology, currently serving over 1250 students across our degree programs. Beginning fall of 2026, the Department of Psychological Sciences and the Division of Biological Sciences will launch our jointly-administered Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience.

The University of Missouri and the Department of Psychological Sciences values and respects the contributions of NTT faculty. NTT appointments are reviewed regularly, may be renewed indefinitely, and are eligible for promotion following departmental and university guidelines. Contract lengths vary depending on length of service and rank. NTT faculty may participate in departmental, college, and university governance.

Duties will include teaching face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online undergraduate courses under a load of four courses in the fall semester and four courses in the spring semester (80% of work effort). The search committee is seeking candidates who can teach psychology courses supporting the Neuroscience BS, such as Behavioral Neuroscience, Cognitive Neuroscience, and Career Foundations in Neuroscience. This position may also involve teaching courses that support the Department of Psychological Sciences more generally, such as our research methods sequence (which includes research design, statistics in psychology, scientific writing) or additional lecture or discussion courses in the faculty member’s field of interest. This position will teach a variety of class enrollment sizes based on departmental need, and teaching a large lecture section (e.g., more than 200 students) each semester should be expected. In addition to teaching courses, Assistant Teaching Professors serve on committees, participate in student development activities, and perform administrative duties (20% of work effort).

We offer a competitive salary and benefits. In addition, the University of Missouri has a strong climate for undergraduate education, and our department has a highly interactive and cooperative faculty. Columbia, Missouri, was recently ranked 25th among the “50 Best Places to Live in the U.S.” by Niche (www.niche.com). In 2020, Niche ranked Columbia among 2020’s “Best Cities for Young Professionals.”
