About The Job

The Curator plays a pivotal role in implementing the Tweed's mission to generate opportunities for close looking and sustained study of original works of art, interdisciplinary teaching and learning, and the generation of new research and scholarship. Working closely with the Museum Director, the Curator conceives and organizes exhibitions and collection rotations that investigate a range of artistic practices and facilitates academic engagement with the collection. While this position is not restricted to applicants with a background in a specific area of art, preference will be given to those whose expertise aligns with the museum’s collection and who express an interest in working across a varied collection that includes ceramics, printmaking, painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture.


Responsibilities

  • Foster new research, acquisitions, and exhibitions that embody the Tweed's vision of a radical welcome, amplify artists and creative practice, and prioritize diversity, equity, and access in all initiatives
  • Curate exhibitions and collection rotations of all sizes and scope that are original in content and form
  • Launch a strategic effort to research the permanent collection, including provenance research, and update object files to ensure records are current and accurate in partnership with the Registrar
  • Build, refine, and strengthen the permanent collection by collaborating with the Director on the Tweed’s collection plan
  • Conceive, research, implement, and project manage curatorial projects as assigned, ensuring that projects remain on track and on budget, and that there is clear and consistent communication with key stakeholders about the project’s needs and timeline
  • Serve as coordinating curator of traveling exhibitions as needed
  • Support the activation of the Study Room by faculty participants
  • Produce exhibition texts—including publications with original research and accessible essays and labels to support public access to curatorial ideas
  • Work closely with colleagues to assure the successful completion of projects, including meeting project deadlines; managing budgets; coordinating with artists, galleries, and lending institutions; and participating in gallery installation
  • Develop curricular engagement opportunities with colleagues throughout the university to advance interdisciplinary collaboration and generate exhibition ideas and projects that make connections to existing courses
  • Build and maintain meaningful connections with artists, galleries, critics, curatorial colleagues, and contemporary art scholarship
  • Present public lectures and gallery talks in conjunction with exhibitions
  • Support the growth and public presence of the Tweed's permanent collection, including the facilitation of outgoing loans and working with the Director to research potential acquisitions


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS plus at least six years of experience, or master’s degree plus at least four years of experience, or a terminal degree plus at least two years of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree, with an interest in the museum's diverse collecting areas
  • 5-7 years of experience in a curatorial setting working with living artists, building collections, organizing exhibitions, and working on publications
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills that demonstrate intellectual rigor and accessibility
  • High level of confidence in public speaking skills for group and individual presentations
  • Experience with innovative interpretative strategies and programs to facilitate academic and community engagement
  • Ability to engage in spirited discussions while maintaining perspective, a professional demeanor, and a sense of humor
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills that center collaboration and transparency
  • Ability and willingness to work after hours and weekends as needed for events, openings, and exhibition installation


Pay And Benefits

Pay Range: $70,000.00 - $73,000.00; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
