Job Summary

The University of Michigan invites applications for a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) to join our Work Connections team. This vital role provides expert support, advocacy, and care planning for employees experiencing disability-related challenges, particularly those impacting mental health, emotional well-being, and workplace participation. The LMSW will be responsible for developing individualized solutions and collaborating across departments to facilitate recovery, promote return-to-work, and foster a safe, resilient university workforce.

Responsibilities*

Case Management & Client Support

  • Assess and addresses the mental health, social, and emotional needs of employees facing temporary or longer-term disability-related challenges.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized care plans in collaboration with medical providers, case managers, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide direct advocacy, counseling, and support throughout the employee's recovery and return-to-work process.
  • Coordinate behavioral threat assessments and fitness for duty evaluations as required.

Program Delivery & Compliance

  • Ensure that service delivery meets university standards, legal requirements (ADA), and relevant state mandates (including Workers' Compensation).
  • Maintain accurate and confidential case documentation, incident reports, and administrative reports in compliance with regulatory and university policies.
  • Promote employee wellness and organizational excellence in disability management and mental health support.

Quality Improvement & Education

  • Analyze case data and service outcomes to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Develop and deliver educational materials, trainings, and outreach to departmental staff, campus units, and external stakeholders on disability management and mental health best practices.
  • Implement strategies based on data trends, audit recommendations, and regulatory changes to enhance service quality.

Collaboration & Liaison

  • Serve as a liaison between Work Connections, medical/mental health providers, families, and university officials.
  • Collaborate with professionals involved in behavioral threat assessment, crisis intervention, and safety planning.
  • Support a culture of safety, inclusivity, and respect across the University of Michigan community.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Participate in departmental meetings and strategic planning.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on disability case management and relevant laws (ADA, Workers' Compensation).
  • Respond to emergencies or crises as part of the Work Connections team.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in social work from an accredited institution.
  • Current LMSW licensure in the State of Michigan.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in disability management, case management, mental health support, or related human services field.
  • Demonstrated experience in care coordination, crisis intervention, and behavioral threat assessment.
  • Strong understanding of ADA requirements, Workers' Compensation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record systems and MS Office.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, ethical practice, and diversity/inclusion.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in higher education, public sector, or occupational health settings.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care and return-to-work strategies.
  • Proven skills in program evaluation, data analysis, and service improvement.
  • Experience developing and delivering staff training, wellness workshops, or training.

Modes of Work

Work Schedule

This is a full-time exempt position, Monday through Friday. As part of the University of Michigan's Future of Work initiative, this role allows for hybrid work arrangements balancing onsite and remote responsibilities according to operational needs.
