Mission Statement

UM-Flint DPS provides complete law enforcement services to the Flint campus. Our police officers are licensed by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and authorized to enforce all federal, state, local laws, and rules of the University of Michigan. Our officers are also deputized by Genesee County. Our officers are well trained in services unique to an academic institution. We are dedicated to the problem oriented community policing philosophy as a way of delivering police services to our campus and downtown community.

Job Summary

The University of Michigan-Flint Department of Public Safety (UM-Flint DPS), a department of the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS), leads all public safety functions on the Flint campus, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment. Through our partnerships across the university and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, we use a blended service model to meet the needs of our community and exceed expectations.

As a Police Officer, you will provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, promoting good community relations and patrolling assigned area to prevent crime, enforce laws, ordinances and traffic regulations, control crowds, and arrest violators. You may also perform specialized police activities such as criminal investigations including interviewing witnesses, crime victims and suspects.

The UM-Flint DPS is a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operation. Work schedules may include nights, weekends, afternoons, holidays and occasional unanticipated overtime. This is a uniformed position.

Responsibilities*

You Will

  • Uphold the highest standards of conduct and customer service while serving and protecting our community and taking measures to prevent crime
  • Enforce University ordinances and regulations and State and Federal laws
  • Patrol campus areas for crime prevention, parking and traffic control and issue citations
  • Policing response on, and adjacent to, campus
  • Obtain and serve warrants, subpoenas and other court documents
  • Identify, apprehend and arrest suspects
  • Testify in criminal, civil and administrative hearings
  • Community oriented policing problem solving


Required Qualifications*

High school or GED equivalent 2 years of relevant police/military experience, completion of an accredited police training academy or training, and MCOLES license and certification (or certifiable)

OR

Associate degree and completion of an accredited police training academy or training and MCOLES license and certification (or certifiable)

You must pass a comprehensive law enforcement background investigation and drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination.

Modes of Work

Onsite

The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to

Additional Information

All members of Department of Public Safety (DPS) are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

As such, you are required to report Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within the first 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks. Background checks are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
