Job Summary

The William L Clements Library at the University of Michigan is seeking a qualified Digitization Specialist to support the ongoing work of the library's digitization program. Reporting to the Digital Projects Librarian, this individual will digitize archival materials in a variety of formats, including manuscripts, prints, photographs, and rare books relating to early American history.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills, high attention to detail, and familiarity with handling fragile materials.

Responsibilities*

  • Perform onsite digitization using a DT Atom digital camera stand or Epson scanner.
  • Create preliminary metadata for archival materials and enter it into spreadsheets.
  • Complete post-processing functions such as cropping and file renaming.
  • Consult with the library conservator regarding safe handling of any fragile materials. Identify materials that are in need of conservation work before digital imaging can take place.
  • Communicate regularly with other members of the team, including curators, digital photographer, and student interns.
  • Support the library instruction and outreach program with select digitization of materials for teaching and outreach purposes. Digitize materials for researcher requests.
  • Contribute to tracking the location and status of transactions using archives management software.
  • Participate in the development and revision of workflows and documentation related to digitization.
  • Perform other duties as needed.


Required Qualifications*

  • A bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative and team-oriented environment.
  • Experience successfully performing repetitive work that requires high accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience successfully working independently while following established procedures and meeting individual deadlines.
  • Experience with the Windows operating system and file management tasks (navigating within directory trees, moving files, renaming files, creating directories, etc.).
  • Evidence of ability to safely handle potentially fragile materials, including books, documents, photographs, and maps.
  • Evidence of ability and desire to learn and apply new technical skills related to software and hardware.
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time in low-light settings.


Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

The mode of work for this position is In-Person.

The general salary for this position is $45,000 annually. Candidates can expect to be paid a competitive and equitable salary. Factors used to determine salary include education level, experience, knowledge and skills for the position, and internal equity within the unit. All candidates are encouraged to discuss salary questions to honor alignment and transparency throughout the recruiting process.
