Job Summary

The University of Michigan School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is seeking outstanding candidates for a tenure-track faculty position focused 80% or more on research. Successful candidates will be expected to establish an independent research program in Visual Sciences with a primary appointment in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and a joint appointment in an appropriate basic science department. Applicants focused on all areas of vision research will be evaluated with particular consideration given to those studying regeneration and restoration of vision, inflammation, modeling and mechanisms of eye disease, and cell and molecular biology of vision. Candidates applying for the rank of assistant or associate professor are particularly encouraged to apply.

The position is for the tenure track and is full-time with an expected hiring date in 2026. Academic rank and salary are commensurate with experience and academic credentials. The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has for many years been a leading center for research with more than 20 active research laboratories and more than 140 clinical and research faculty, and maintains a top 10 national ranking. Vision research at the University of Michigan is supported by a P30 Vision Center grant with 5 cores and a T32 training grant for graduate students and fellows in eye research. The department is also one of the country?s leaders in ophthalmology career development awards from both the NIH and foundations.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses. Employment will require both a criminal background check and an institutional reference check regarding any misconduct. Candidates will be required to submit a self-disclosure form as well as an authorization to release information form.
