The Lactation Consultant functions in a multidimensional role as coordinator of lactation support services, practitioner, educator and resource to patients, nursing staff, and medical staff.

General Requirements Current Michigan Registered Nurse Licensure IBCLC certification
Work Experience 2 years of perinatal experience
Education Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university BSN (preferred)
Specialized Knowledge and Skills Experience in adult education Experience working in an LC capacity Demonstrates strong interpersonal and written communication skills Demonstrates independent clinical judgment and skills Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.

- Directs, implements and evaluates the Lactation Support Plan.
- Directs patient care activities for lactation.
- Coordinates, facilitates and educates nursing staff and physicians regarding breast feeding problem and issues.
- Accepts referrals from physicians and nurses to instruct patients regarding breast feeding, available resources, and equipment needs.
- Assesses, counsels, and supports patients with actual or potential lactation dysfunction.
- Provides written information for the patient, family, or caregiver.
- Obtains verbal feedback from patients to verify understanding and observes return demonstration when appropriate.
- Documents teaching and learning in EMR.
- Evaluates quality of care through quality improvement monitors.
- Maintains knowledge of current trends in human lactation and provides evidence of clinical competency.
- Additional duties as assigned.
- Supervises and provides performance feedback for Caregivers in relations to lactation services.
- Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow ICARE values.
- Demonstrate knowledge and respect patient, service provider and organizational confidentiality procedures and protocols under the HIPAA rivacy Policies and following those procedures when using and disclosing protected health information.
