Assistant Teaching Professor in Biomedical Engineering

University of Massachusetts Lowell
Lowell, MA Full Time
POSTED ON 12/12/2025 CLOSED ON 1/10/2026

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Teaching Professor in Biomedical Engineering position at University of Massachusetts Lowell?

The Francis College of Engineering (FCOE) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) invites applications from exceptional candidates for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor position in the Biomedical Engineering Department. The role is expected to start in September 2026. Teaching Professors play a vital role in developing and delivering curriculum within the FCOE and are actively involved in departmental, college, and university activities. Assistant Teaching Professors enjoy full faculty privileges and undergo an assessment for promotion to Associate Teaching Professor (with equivalent to tenure).

The successful candidate will join the department and college faculty and will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, engaging in curriculum development, contributing to professional activities, and participating in relevant departmental and university service, including outreach. Teaching faculty play a crucial role in promoting the department’s educational mission, engaging students in experiential learning, and fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community.

UMass Lowell’s Department of Biomedical Engineering trains students to turn discoveries into real-world impact in the medical device and biotechnology industries through an ABET-accredited B.S. program—Massachusetts’ first at a public university—with specialized tracks in medical device development, cell and tissue engineering, and biomechanics. Students can accelerate their education with a 4 1 B.S.–to–M.S. option and pursue advanced studies through the intercampus Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology (BMEBT) M.S./Ph.D. or the Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, all enhanced by hands-on research in state-of-the-art labs and core research facilities. Our collaborative discipline-specific and education-based research is supported by NSF, NIH, DoD, and industry, fostering a culture of innovative education and scholarship.

UMass Lowell is a nationally recognized public research university that is rapidly growing. The WSJ ranks UMass Lowell as the top public university in Massachusetts and the best in the state for both “Best Value” and social mobility. We are a Carnegie R1 research university, and our students benefit from the UML Guarantee—every first-time, first-year student can participate in at least one paid, credit-bearing, or career-connected experience. Our inclusive campus has received the HEED Award six times, and UMass Lowell is the Commonwealth’s only AASHE STARS Platinum institution—one of just a few worldwide. In addition to strong graduate outcomes, 95% of graduates find their next step within months. These awards reflect a culture that combines research excellence with a focus on student success.

Within the FCOE, faculty are part of an ABET-accredited, industry-engaged community that includes biomedical, chemical, civil, environmental, electrical, plastics, mechanical, and computer engineering. Our college has more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students, with 20 percent identifying as female and 25 percent as underrepresented minorities in engineering. Collaboration is central to our research environment: the NERVE Center advances robotics and human–robot interaction; the Fabric Discovery Center links advanced textiles to health and defense; the Raytheon–UMass Lowell Research Institute (RURI) and Printed Electronics Research Collaborative (PERC) drive the development of next-generation electronics; and our campus-wide Core Research Facilities provide open access to over 100 instruments and expert staff. Hands-on spaces like the Lin MakerSpace and entrepreneurship programs such as DifferenceMaker foster discovery and real-world impact. At its core, we are a university dedicated to student success and growth.
