The University of Maryland Department of Public Safety (UMPD) is a full-service, legislated police agency that serves the myriad needs of the students, faculty, staff, and visitors within its jurisdiction. UMPD is currently recruiting candidates to be considered for the position of University Police Officer II. Applicants must have a non-provisional police officer certification through the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission, or comparable police certification through another state (Comparative Compliance), must have successfully completed a Police Field Training Program and must have successfully completed a probationary period with a police agency.*
UMPD is seeking dynamic individuals that exhibit good character, sound judgment, honesty, reliability and integrity combined with excellent communication skills to serve the University of Maryland community.
University of Maryland Police Officers patrol designated areas by vehicle and foot; respond to calls for assistance and emergencies; apprehend, detain, process, and arrest individuals who violate Maryland Vehicle and Criminal laws; interacts with and establishes rapport with the campus community; testifies in court cases as necessary, and work rotating shifts. Police officers may be called back to duty in emergency situations and are required to work weekends, nights, and holidays as needed by the department.
Physical Demands:
The employee will be expected to maintain their physical condition in order to successfully accomplish all assignments without jeopardizing their personal well-being or that of the community which they are expected to serve. Must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends, nights, and holidays as needed by UMDPS. Police officers are essential and may be called back to duty in emergency situations.

Licenses/ Certifications:
Satisfactory completion of a Maryland Police Training Commission recognized or approved Police Academy Training program and successful completion of a Police Field Training program. OTHER: Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission and valid Maryland Non- commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license.
In addition to the above, Police Officer applicants must:
• Be 21 years of age upon graduation from the Police Academy;
• Be a citizen of the United States;
• Meet various physical requirements; have vision that is correctable to 20/20 in each eye;
• Must not have been convicted of a felony;
Considered applicants must participate in the following:
• Physical Agility test;
• Oral Interview
• Truth Verification Examination (Polygraph);
• Drug Screening;
• Physical and Psychological Examination (after Conditional Offer of Employment); and
• Complete background investigation
The complete hiring process takes 2-3 months. Applicants who are not selected for hire during this process may reapply for future vacancies in one year unless notified of disqualification.

Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED AND Satisfactory completion of a Maryland Police Training Commission recognized or approved Police Academy Training program and successful completion of a Police Field Training program. OTHER: Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission and valid Maryland Non- commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: General knowledge of citizens rights and responsibilities; of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. Skill in detecting situations imperiling public safety; in operating emergency vehicles under all conditions; in the care and use of firearms, self defense tools and criminal detection devices. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to operate two way radios and telephones in a variety of environments; to apply knowledge, experience, and reason to arrive at prompt and effective decisions for both routine and critical situations; to show sensitivity in interactions with a diverse population; to maintain composure and demonstrate restraint in stressful and dangerous situations; to perform extensive sitting, driving, standing, walking, climbing, and running; to lift, drag, and carry heavy objects; to establish and maintain effective working relationships; to follow oral and written directions; to provide guidance and training to others; to respond to emergency situations requiring physical stamina and force; to enter and exit vehicles frequently and quickly; to work in and wear personal protective equipment; to conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations.
