A genuine enjoyment & appreciation for athletic bands and working with non-music majors
Strong musicianship
Multiple successful years experience of teaching marching band
Experience working with collegiate athletic bands
Strong communication, planning, & organizing skills
Experience writing drill and music arrangements for athletic bands
Administrative & organizational experience - including coordinating logistics of ensemble travel
Knowledge of current trends in pedagogy and repertoire programming for instrumental ensembles
Preferred qualifications
Experience arranging music for marching band
Experience providing student leadership training
Experience teaching marching band pedagogy
Experience designing halftime shows for college football audiences
Experience working with outdoor sound amplification and recording
Successful secondary teaching background
Demonstrated excellence in marching band, wind conducting, ensemble performance, or other creative activity
Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative contributions to the profession
Demonstrated success recruiting students at the collegiate level
Demonstrated commitment to and/or success in working with a wide range of populations on campus and in the community
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Assist in the teaching and administration of the UMD Athletic Band program that includes 5 total instructional staff - 4 graduate assistants and 1 program coordinator
Co-teach the “Mighty Sound of Maryland” Marching Band
Lead the instruction and administration of the Maryland Pep Band (fall and spring semesters)
Conduct the University Band (fall and spring semesters)
Teach the Marching Band Pedagogy
Recruit students to the athletic band program
Undertake additional possible assignments based on the successful candidate’s secondary skills and program needs
Service to the department as assigned
Minimum Requirements
Master of Music degree in wind conducting or a closely related field at the time of application
Three years of successful teaching experience at the university, community college, and/or high school level with a significant marching band component
