Job Summary

Under limited supervision, supervises and manages the daily operations and pharmacy personnel of the inpatient pharmacy departments. Assists in developing and implementing department-specific goals and objectives to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of pharmacy services. Assists in implementing goals and objectives as they apply to the mission of the system pharmacy enterprise for quality pharmaceutical care services.

Under limited supervision, supervises and manages daily operational workflows and pharmacy personnel to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant medication-use processes. Collaborates with pharmacy leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate department goals, operational improvements, and quality initiatives that support the mission of the system pharmacy enterprise. Ensures adherence to regulatory standards, optimizes inventory and controlled substance management, and maintains high-quality sterile and non‑sterile compounding practices. May be required to act in the capacity of another pharmacy leader in their absence or when designated to do so.

Specific responsibilities of the Manager, Pharmacy Operations will be documented and retained internally by the Department of Pharmacy.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage daily inpatient pharmacy operations, overseeing and directing the work of pharmacy team members to ensure operations are aligned with departmental goals, regulatory standards, and service standards.
  • Monitor operational performance, implement improvements, and lead execution of new workflows, technologies, and quality initiatives.
  • Manage staffing functions including hiring, scheduling, performance evaluations, coaching, and competency development for pharmacists and technicians.
  • Maintain compliance with medication management policies, accreditation requirements, and all applicable federal, state, and institutional regulations.
  • Ensure accurate inventory control for all inpatient medications, including proper storage, security of controlled substances, and management of drug shortages and recalls.
  • Partner with leadership on budget planning, financial oversight, cost‑containment strategies, and operational reporting.
  • Support sterile and nonsterile compounding operations by ensuring adherence to USP standards, maintaining cleanroom quality, and developing training and competency programs. Oversee safe handling, preparation, and disposal of hazardous medications in coordination with nursing and regulatory teams.
  • Collaborate with nursing, medical staff, and patient care teams to resolve medication-related issues and support optimal therapeutic outcomes.
  • Maintain and update department policies, procedures, operational documentation, and system workflows related to medication-use processes.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Work Experience

Education & Experience - Required

  • Education: Doctorate of Pharmacy from a college or university accredited by ACPE.
  • Experience: Minimum of four (4) years hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Licensure: Licensure by the Maryland State Board of Pharmacy.

Education & Experience - Preferred

  • Completion of a health-system pharmacy administration and leadership residency program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacy.
  • Masters Degree in health care or business management.
  • Minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary pharmacy practice, including pharmacology, pharmaceutics, medication safety principles, clinical workflows, and the effective use of pharmacy automation and medication‑use technology.
  • Strong understanding of health care operations and regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission standards, state and federal pharmacy laws, and best practices in medication storage, handling, and distribution.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability, including supervising, coaching, developing, and motivating staff to achieve high levels of performance, engagement, and accountability.
  • Experience with regulatory readiness and compliance auditing, including relevant USP chapters, controlled substance management, and medication-use safety programs.
  • Proven analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex operational issues, identify root causes, and implement efficient, sustainable solutions.
  • Proficiency with clinical and operational information systems, including pharmacy information systems, electronic health records, automated dispensing technologies, and standard productivity software such as spreadsheets, databases, and word‑processing tools.
  • Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across disciplines, present information clearly, and build strong working relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead operational improvement initiatives, including optimizing workflows, implementing new technologies, and supporting change management across pharmacy teams.
  • Strong competency in data-driven decision making, including the ability to interpret operational metrics, financial reports, and quality dashboards to guide performance improvements.
  • Prioritizes work responsibilities and manages multiple demands.
