Job Summary

Performs patient observation functions and applies technical skills of a limited uncomplicated nature. Remotely provides continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients using audio/visual technology. Verbally directs the patient from engaging in risky behaviors. Following department procedures and escalation process, summons unit staff if the patient requires assistance. Knowledgeable and supportive of patient and institutional confidentiality and related policies.

Primary Responsibilities

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed.

  • Maintains electronic visual & auditory observation of patients with safety concerns for up to 10 patients (depending on patient acuity). Verbally redirects patient over digital 2-way audio device that is in patient room. Immediately summons the nursing staff if the patient requires.
  • Actively handoff key patient information and behavioral status during shift change to the incoming tech to support a seamless transition of patient monitoring.
  • Immediately alerts the clinical team at the earliest indication that a patient may pose a risk to themselves or others and promptly engages resources when safety issues emerge.
  • Leads efforts to identify, report, and mitigate patient safety hazards, ensuring prompt collaboration with nursing staff for resolution. Understands the unique complexities of each member organization to effectively assess how the care environment influences patient needs within the program.
  • Maintains all required electronic clinical documentation as identified on initiation, during observation, and discontinuation of continuous video monitoring throughout the entire shift with 100% accuracy, clarity, and completeness within the appropriate timeframe.
  • Demonstrates sound knowledge base and actions in the care of reporting observations for age specific patient populations to the RN.
  • Establishes and maintains courteous and effective relationships with patients, visitors, co-workers, and other members of the health care team; demonstrates sensitivity and awareness to the needs of patients, visitors and co-workers and responds promptly to verbal and/or written instructions.
  • Performs related and delegated tasks such as setting up or discharging special equipment, answering the phone and taking and relaying messages. Participates in investigations regarding submitted UMMSafe reports and other safety concerns.
  • Collaborates and engages with local member organization unit team members regarding patients that are admitted to the program.
  • Escalates concerns to Charge tech and/or Supervisor, including incidents with the patient or the unit teams, technology issues, and other items of concern during their shifts.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information (HIPAA).
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Work Experience

Education & Experience - Required

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant/Medical Assistant.
  • Current American Heart Association CPR certification required or obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • One (1) year of prior full-time direct, patient care work experience in a health care facility, or equivalent experience

Education & Experience - Preferred

  • Two (2) years of full-time direct patient care.
  • Previous experience documenting in EPIC.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Basic computer operations skills.
  • Ability to utilize universal safety precautions and to act appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to recognize problems and to identify and implement a course of action required.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English in order to follow and give instructions accurately and clearly and able to communicate effectively using a microphone and headset.
  • The ability to learn a variety of tasks and follow instructions with minimal errors. The ability to ensure the confidentiality and rights of all patients and departmental documents is required. Ability to complete documentation/forms related to observation of patient.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
