The Surgical Acute Care unit is a medical surgical unit with a focus on postoperative care. Scope of service includes continuous cardiac monitoring, continuous oxygen saturations, tracheostomy management, wound, and drain management, including feeding tubes, wound vacs, and surgical drains. Patients are admitted following surgical procedures via intra-hospital transfer from IMC, ICU, PACU, and as direct admissions through Express Care/Critical Care Resuscitation Unit (CCRU). We coordinate independent care to patients within a clinical specialty as a fully effective participative member of multidisciplinary patient care service team. Nurses working on the Surgical Acute Care unit pride themselves on providing outstanding care.

The Surgical Acute Care unit serves as the primary postoperative designation for the following specialty surgical services, including but not limiting to Surgical Oncology, Gynecology Neoplasia, Urology, Acute Care Emergency Surgery, Otolaryngology, Oral Facial Maxillary, Plastic surgeries, and General Surgery.

Work Experience

General Summary

  • This role is considered the minimum role for all nurses at UMMC who have less than 12 months of experience. This nurse will be competent in the skills/knowledge required and fully participate in unit governance. He/she will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. Independently provides and coordinates care provided to patients within a clinical specialty. Serves as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team. Demonstrates and models the full range of nursing professional practice in both care provided and in participation in development of strategies to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction with service and cost effectiveness at the unit level. Is accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care. Is accountable to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit, and to the nurse manager for the totality of work performance.

Education And Experience

  • Competent evaluation with successful passing of probation; current on all mandatory classes/training.
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligibility to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required.
  • Maintenance of 10 contact hours of education/year.
  • Member of a professional organization.
  • Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting.

Patient Safety

  • Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
  • Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses to the appropriate management authority.
