The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (“The Clarice”) at the University of Maryland is part of the College of Arts and Humanities. A world class center featuring exceptional performance, arts education and community engagement programs, and six performance venues, The Clarice is home to UMD’s nationally recognized Schools of Music (SOM) and of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) and its own artistic platform, Clarice Presents–as well as the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library (MSPAL). Together, these units create a welcoming, supportive, and socially conscious community by leveraging creativity, innovation, scholarship, and community engagement across the arts to inspire students, artists and positive change in its communities. Many of the performances and activities of these partners are also amplified through Arts for All, a university-wide initiative dedicated to combining the power of the arts, technology, and social justice to address the world’s grand challenges collaboratively.


Position Summary/Purpose:

The Graphic Designer - Performing Arts will serve as part of the College of Arts and Humanities’ Performing Arts Marketing and Communications (PA MarCom) team. Reporting to the Senior Graphic Designer, this position supports a wide range of creative projects and campaigns for the partners that make up the performing arts at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (The Clarice) and its Clarice Presents (CP) series; School of Music (SOM); School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS); and the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library (MSPAL). The Designer also works collaboratively with the Director of Marketing and Communications for Performing Arts and other members of the ARHU MarCom team.


The Designer is responsible for creating captivating art and visual assets to reflect the brand identities of the performing arts partners, including but not limited to all print and digital collateral: brochures, program books, season calendars, print and digital advertising, e-communications design, signage, direct mail and event invitations, branding and brand updates. They will ensure outstanding quality, distribution, and placement of all materials by building vendor relationships and helping to coordinate proofing processes. The Designer also provides design support to the performing arts creative team and is part of the larger marketing and communications team for the college. Outstanding candidates will exhibit a passion for performing arts along with talents in contemporary design styles and techniques. They will also have excellent communication, collaboration, and time management skills, with experience working on tight deadlines and with extensive review.


Physical Demands:

-Almost all of the physical activity required for this position is office-based, primarily working with a computer.

-Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.

-Ability to manipulate signage, frames, and other physical printed materials.

-Occasionally assist with event set-up, break down, and staffing.

-Visual acuity to review materials, designs, publications, etc.

-Ability to maneuver around the campus to attend meetings and other campus events.

-Ability to occasionally lift, push, or carry items of up to 25 lbs.


Preferences:

-Previous experience in public higher education, arts institutions, or agencies serving similar industries

-Skill in the use of Adobe Creative Suite

-Demonstrated background or passion for the performing arts

-Video editing or motion graphic design experience, including Adobe Premiere Pro and/or After Effects.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.


Experience: Three (3) years of professional graphic design experience.


Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Knowledge of graphic design.

Skill in oral and written communication.

Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.

Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.

Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
