Job Summary/Basic Functions

The University of Mary Washington has an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Assistant Director of Custodial Operations. The Assistant Director of Custodial Operations is responsible for the comprehensive management, coordination, and continuous improvement of custodial operations across approximately 2.4 million square feet of campus facilities.

This position provides leadership for both internal teams and custodial contractors, ensuring alignment with institutional standards, regulatory requirements, and service expectations. The role emphasizes strategic planning, performance management, contract administration, and customer engagement, while supporting broader Facilities Operations initiatives.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Planning, directing, and evaluating all custodial operations (in-house and contracted).
  • Establishing and maintaining service standards and performance metrics.
  • Managing budgets, staffing, and resource allocation.
  • Overseeing contract performance and compliance.
  • Supporting facilities condition assessments and long-term planning.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills managing large teams in a custodial or facilities environment
  • Knowledge of custodial operations, cleaning standards, equipment, and safety practices
  • Ability to develop policies, procedures, and service standards
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Knowledge of OSHA and safety regulations applicable to custodial work
  • Ability to manage large teams and/or contract services in institutional or commercial settings
  • Strong multitasking skills with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively
  • Proficient in the use of various computer software applications
  • Solid project management skills with a track record of successfully managing multiple projects simultaneously

Required Experience:

  • Progressive hands-on experience managing custodial operations across large, complex facilities portfolios (academic, residential, mixed-use)
  • Experience handling personnel matters, including performance management and conflict resolution
  • Experience with contract administration, including RFP participation, vendor selection, and performance management
  • Experience with CMMS to support operations, reporting, and accountability

Required Licensure:

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License to operate a University/state owned or leased vehicle.

Additional Considerations:

  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., RBSM, OSHA 30)
  • Familiarity with Virginia purchasing guidelines and procedures
  • Experience working in K-12 and/or higher education environments
  • Demonstrated success in organizational change, workforce development, and supervision of multi-level teams
  • Familiarity with best practices (e.g., APPA, sustainability and green cleaning)
