Responsibilities

The Chief of Police provides effective leadership, management, and oversight for the University Police Department. Works with subordinates to plan, organize, and direct departmental activities. Ensures the equitable enforcement of State law and University Rules. Performs administrative duties related to the management of the University Police Department. Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the University Police Department, to include ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, budget development and oversight, policy development and implementation, analysis of crime/call data, allocation of resources, and emergency management. Oversees services provided by the department to include patrol, traffic enforcement, investigation, facility security, and administrative support services. Coordinates assigned activities with other University departments and outside agencies.

Work schedule may include varied hours and shifts (day, evening, night, and weekend shifts may apply at the onset of employment and may be changed during the course of employment). This position requires prompt telephone response and, if needed, a “no more than 30-minute” response time from the time of call to arrival on campus.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be an active and committed Christian who will support the University’s mission and who will be an active participant in their local church.
  • A bachelor’s degree is required. A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field is preferred.
  • A current and valid Advanced Peace Officer certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement is required.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of full-time employment experience in law enforcement is required. Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education certification and a combination of law enforcement and related experience may be substituted.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a supervisor in law enforcement is required.
  • Competent presentation and training skills are required.
  • Proficiency in grammar, spelling, and report-writing is required.
  • Proficiency in law enforcement equipment, vehicles, and weapons is required.
  • Must possess exceptional time management and detail-oriented skills.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license and be insurable by the University automobile insurance carrier.
  • Must agree ro the University's Employee Statement f Understanding.
