Story and Multimedia Producer

University of Maine
Orono, ME Full Time
POSTED ON 4/25/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 10/20/2026

Position Summary

The University of Maine is seeking a storyteller and video creator to bring the energy, people and impact of our campus to life through social-first video. This is a full-cycle creator role—ideal for a video journalist, content creator or social media reporter who wants to own stories from idea to impact. You’ll pitch, report, shoot, host, edit and publish original content that captures everything from breakthrough research and major events to the everyday moments that define life at UMaine.

This is not a behind-the-scenes role—you’ll be on camera, shaping stories in real time and building a strong, visible portfolio seen across platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Working as part of a collaborative content team within the Division of Marketing and Communications, you’ll create short-form video that feels authentic, engaging and built for how audiences consume content today, helping define how a major research university shows up in the world. Typical hiring range for this position is $54,000 to $60,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities

Video Production, Hosting and Storytelling (80%)

  • Pitch, research, report and produce original video stories aligned with university priorities, in consultation with the executive director of communications.
  • Serve as an on-camera host or narrator for social and digital video content.
  • Produce short- and long-form video optimized for platforms including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts and Facebook, with flexibility to adapt content for emerging channels.
  • Independently manage all phases of video production, including preproduction, shooting, editing and postproduction.
  • Conduct interviews and apply strong journalistic standards for accuracy, clarity and storytelling.
  • Cover high-profile campus events and major university initiatives, including occasional evening and weekend assignments.
  • Collaborate with marketing, content and communications colleagues to align video storytelling with broader content strategy.
  • Monitor performance metrics and refine video content based on audience engagement and platform trends.

Social Media Management and Writing (20%)

  • Translate long-form editorial content from the UMaine News website into engaging, platform-specific social media posts and concise web copy.
  • Write captions and supporting copy that drive audience engagement and traffic to university channels.
  • Manage posting schedules and coordinate distribution of video content across social platforms.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, broadcast journalism, film, digital media or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1-3 years of professional experience in video journalism, social media reporting or multimedia production.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce end-to-end video content independently.
  • Strong on-camera presence and interviewing skills.
  • Solid video shooting, lighting and audio skills.
  • Experience in a newsroom, broadcast or digital-first reporting environment.
  • Familiarity with short-form social video trends and best practices.
  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally.
