The University of Lynchburg, a private, regional university in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia, is seeking applicants for full-time, Admissions Counselor position in Undergraduate Admissions.

This position reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Director of Admissions. The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and will be carried out by the Admissions Counselor. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior.

Job Purpose:

The primary focus of the Admissions Counselor is to build strong, lasting relationships with prospective students, guiding and supporting them through every stage of the college choice process—including program selection, application completion, admission evaluation, financial aid navigation, and final enrollment. Representing the institution to prospective students, families, high school guidance counselors, and community organizations, this position executes data-informed territory recruitment plans to contribute directly to institutional enrollment goals.

Specific Job Duties:

• Territory Management & Strategy: Plan, manage, and execute targeted recruitment strategies within an assigned geographic territory to meet individual inquiry, applicant, and enrollment goals. Develop and maintain territory data to inform strategic travel itineraries and outreach plans.
• Multi-Channel Student Outreach: Utilize phone, email, text messaging, and social media outreach proactively to cultivate personalized relationships with prospective students and families, guiding them from inquiry to matriculation.
• Application Review & Admissions Decisions: Review candidate application files thoroughly, evaluate transcripts and credentials, and render admissions decisions in compliance with institutional standards.
• CRM Workflow & Data Tracking (Slate): Manage prospective student records in Slate CRM. Record all conversations, campus touchpoints, and recruitment interactions to drive personalized communication workflows and yield tracking.
• Campus Visits, Presentations & On-Campus Interviews: Conduct individual student/family interviews, deliver engaging group presentations, and lead information sessions for visiting students, families, and college counseling personnel.
• Event Participation & Field Recruitment: Represent the institution at on-campus and off-campus recruitment events, college fairs, high school visits, and community outreach programs.
• Counselor & Community Relationship Building: Develop long-standing relationships with high school counselors and community-based organizations (CBOs), designing collaborative opportunities to bring students and advisors to campus.
• Special Project Ownership & Operational Support: Manage or oversee a specialized operational project (e.g., Student Ambassador leadership, campus tour program management, digital outreach initiatives, or transfer credit liaison work) to support enrollment goals.
• Committee Governance & Professional Development: Serve on campus committees related to student development (orientation, leadership, retention). Participate in national/regional professional organizations (e.g., NACAC, SACAC/VACAC) for continuous development.
• Basic Financial Aid & Affordability Counseling: Guiding prospective students and families through FAFSA completion steps, merit scholarship qualifications, and cost of attendance estimates.
• Targeted Yield & Conversion Campaign Execution: Executing phone marathons, admitted student outreach campaigns, and personalized decision follow-ups during peak yield season.
• Transfer & Diversity Pipeline Support: Partnering with community colleges and access organizations to expand non-traditional and underrepresented student recruitment.
• Other duties as assigned

Starting Salary: $20.77 per hour

Schedule:

• 8:30 am - 5:00 pm (7.5 hours/day with some evenings and weekends to meet needs of the department may be required

Experience/Skills:

• Ability to communicate effectively and have the ability to understand, comprehend and follow directions
• Must have good teamwork skills
• Ability to write effectively
• Exceptional attention to details
• Strong proofreading skills
• Comfortable delivering presentations to small and large groups

Physical Demands:

• Prolonged standing/sitting/wrist movement
• Long periods sitting in front of a computer screen
• Time spent traveling in motor vehicles/flights to and from recruitment events
• Limited lifting and carrying of luggage and recruitment collateral
• Ability to lift 20 lbs.

Required Qualifications:

• 1-2 years of professional experience in sales, marketing recruitment, higher education, coaching, or another goal-oriented field
• Valid Drivers License
• Extensive travel required
