Job Description Summary

The Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at The University of Kansas Medical Center provides high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered psychological care to athletes and physically active individuals with sport-related psychological concerns. Clinical responsibilities include the assessment, treatment, counseling, and ongoing management of psychological factors affecting athletic performance, participation, injury recovery, and return to sport for athletes ages 12 and older. The faculty member provides appropriate evaluation, support, and referral for patients whose mental or behavioral health needs require services beyond the scope of the sports psychology practice.

This position is jointly employed by The University of Kansas Medical Center and The University of Kansas Health System and supports the clinical, educational, research, and service missions of both institutions.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, the faculty member actively participates in the education and mentorship of learners, including psychology interns, post-doctoral fellows, medical students, residents, fellows, and other trainees. The individual also contributes to departmental academic activities through teaching, scholarly engagement, clinical collaboration, research, committee service, and other activities that advance the missions of the department and institution.

Job Description

Job Duties:

• Provide specialized clinical, educational, and/or research services within the area of sports psychology using current, evidence-based practices and techniques, including assessment, psychotherapy, counseling, and support for athletes ages 12 and older.
• Deliver comprehensive psychological services across clinical settings, including individual and group psychotherapy and counseling for patients and families, as appropriate.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary clinical teams, academic programs, and institutional partners to support patient care, continuity of care, program development, research, and scholarly activity.
• Contribute to the education, training, supervision, and mentorship of learners, including psychology interns, post-doctoral fellows, students, trainees, and other designated groups.
• Participate in departmental meetings, case conferences, Grand Rounds, seminars, faculty meetings, committees, and other academic activities as assigned.
• Engage in ongoing professional development and maintain expertise in sports psychology and related areas of clinical practice, including the psychological care of athletes and appropriate referral for concerns beyond the scope of the practice.

Required Qualifications

Education: Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited clinical program.

• This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.
  
  

Certifications/Licenses: Licensed or eligible for licensure as an independent licensed psychologist in the States of Kansas and Missouri.

Work Experience: One (1) year of supervised clinical experience, including internship and/or post-doctoral fellowship experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: M.A. or M.S. in Sport and Exercise Psychology.

Certifications/Licenses

• CMPC certification.
• APA Division 47 Proficiency.
• PsyPACT authorization or eligibility.
  
  

Work Experience

• Specialized training in sport psychology.
• Experience treating eating disorders in athletes and athletes returning from injury.
