What are the responsibilities and job description for the Communications Specialist position at University of Iowa Health Care Health System?
The University of Iowa, College of Law is seeking a communications specialist who will serve in a dual role as the College of Law's internal communications specialist and report to the Marketing Manager. They will also serve as the Dean Suite's main administrator and serve as first point of contact.
Key Areas of Responsibilities and Specific Job Tasks
Message Development and Implementation
- Develop and build internal communications policies and practice.
- Draft, edit and proofread communications using UI Brand Guidelines and AP style applications.
- Finalize and distribute communications for internal website, building signage, and other distribution channels.
- Develop and manage internal SharePoint site.
- Actively seek out areas to improve internal communications and make practical suggestions.
Public Relations
- Serve as first point of contact for the administrative suite; includes Dean's Office, Associate Deans, and Career Services. Duties involve greeting visitors, answer and direct incoming calls and screening requests of visitors and callers responding to general inquiries directly or referring to appropriate administrative staff.
- Manage and maintain the Dean's suite, including creating and managing student mail files and assuming cash handling duties for student organizations.
Information Management

Responsible for the college's internal communications, building signage and events calendar, including:
- Virtual Receptionist
- Room reservations oversight
- Calendar processing, including management of event scheduling
- Digital signage process, including developing and maintaining weekly content for lobby signage
- Weekly student e-mail
- Directory Signage
- Receive and monitor law-webmaster e-mails and monitors, including departmental emails.
- Update student listservs and dispatch lists.
- Direct non-classroom space reservations.
- Provide assistance with departmental projects, including annual photo directory, exam administration, order supplies, and more.
Leadership/Supervision
- Possible supervision of student employees to include developing best practices, provide training and direction, assign tasks, etc.

Position Qualifications
Education required:
Bachelor's degree, or equivalent mix of education and experience
Required Qualifications
- Evidence of strong organizational and prioritization skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
- Evidence of working with diplomacy, discretion, and good judgement.
- Minimum 1 year of work experience in an internal communications setting or administration.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to write, edit and proof content in accordance with established brand guidelines
- Highly organized and able to establish priorities and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated understanding of DEI issues and ability to effectively interact with diverse populations.
- Experience working in a team-based environment.
- Ability to work effectively with some interruptions.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Knowledge of University of Iowa policies and procedures.
- Working knowledge of Canva and willingness to learn and use web-based systems such as Qualtrics, Drupal, and Ad Astra
- Experience with Microsoft 365
- Familiarity and experience working in college or university setting
