Job Description

The Chemistry Department at the University of Indianapolis invites applications for an adjunct instructor. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching a 100-level course in chemistry, such as Introduction to Organic and Biochemistry (CHEM104), Introduction to Chemistry (CHEM103), or General Chemistry I (CHEM150) with any associated lab session. This is a part-time, non-tenure track position.

The Position Will Include But Is Not Limited To

  • lecture preparation and delivery
  • oversight of laboratory experiments
  • creation and grading of assessments
  • classroom management
  • coordination with other members of the department as there are multiple sections of these courses each semester.

Experience

REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and outstanding interpersonal and collaborative team skills are required.
  • Experience with or interest in alternative instructional modes, such as web-based instruction, cooperative learning or integrated curricula is preferred.

Education

  • Masters in chemistry or a related discipline is required.
  • Ph.D. in chemistry or related discipline is preferred

Essential Functions

  • Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
  • Prepare and deliver lectures to undergraduate students on topics relevant to general/introductory chemistry
  • Evaluate and grade students' class work, laboratory work, assignments, papers and examinations.
  • Supervise laboratory sessions, coordinate laboratory operations, and supervise undergraduate lab assistants.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
  • Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students on academic and vocational curricula and on career issues.
  • Follow the guidance and direction of supervisor(s).
  • Demonstrate respectful, ethical, responsible behavior.
  • Abide by the University’s policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Perform employee responsibilities as detailed in employee handbooks and policies.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.
  • Other duties, including special projects, as required or assigned.
