Summary:

This position provides direct oversight and instruction of IIP student internship program including directing, recruiting, instructing/educating, and overseeing the student interns. This position is based in Springfield, IL.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Recruitment and Administrative: Fulfill the administrative aspects of the undergraduate internship program including but not limited to: direct and oversee recruitment of UIS undergraduate and graduate interns; supervise and evaluate students through the UIS internship office; liaise with internal and external educational partners and supervise non-UIS undergraduate interns as directed by IIP leadership. Supervise paid student workers monitoring and approving their work product and timesheets. In collaboration with IIP staff, interview and select intern candidates.
  • Educational Learning: Conduct bi-weekly meetings educating interns on the main causes of wrongful convictions and directing case evaluation work of student interns. In collaboration with the staff and intake attorney and case intake program coordinator, assign cases and direct the case evaluation work of the student interns. Direct student interns throughout their case research and investigation process including the drafting of trial abstracts, evidence charts, universal work product document, FOIAs and police report book marking. Provide relevant direction on how to structure and orally present a final case evaluation to the legal team.
  • Experiential Learning: Direct student experiential learning opportunities including accompanying students and interns on case related activities such as client releases, court hearings and prison visits around the state. Coordinate and direct students in making presentations about their experiences as IIP student interns at university and community events. Schedule and coordinate campus presentation events given by IIP clients, experts or other speakers on campus which includes interns, university and community stakeholders.
  • Community Presentations and Other duties as Assigned: At the direction of IIP leadership, prepare and deliver public and private presentations about the work of IIP. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • A total of three (3) years (36 months) in education, training and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position. (Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in legal studies or a related course of study
  • Additional education, training or work experience in the area of specialization inherent in the position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to work efficiently in a busy office setting and off-site as necessary

Ability and willingness to travel (with a valid driver's license) frequently within Illinois and occasionally out of state.

Ability and willingness to participate productively on multi-disciplinary project teams made up of faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students, attorneys, investigators, experts and others.

Understanding of and commitment to the mission and programs of IIP.

Ability to present to public audiences.

Travel Requirements:

30% Position requires the ability to travel as necessary for prison visits, court hearings, and releases. Travel may occur during inclement weather conditions such as rain, sleet, or snow.
